Airds, NSW 2560

Predominantly residential suburb of south-western Sydney in the City of Campbelltown LGA, about 56 km south-west of the Sydney CBD and part of the Macarthur region. Airds is a former NSW Housing Commission estate: construction began in the mid-1970s (the name was approved in May 1976) on American Radburn planning principles that separated cars from pedestrians, and it became one of Sydney's most socially disadvantaged suburbs, with public housing making up 94% of homes. It is now in the middle of a long-running community renewal — the Airds–Bradbury Renewal Project — that is replacing the estate with a socially mixed community of private, affordable and social housing. At the 2021 census Airds had 3,265 residents — 63.4% born in Australia, 15.5% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, with Arabic the most common language other than English — a multicultural suburb where single-parent families made up 43.5% of families, nearly three times the national average, and 10–19 year-olds are the largest age group. Suburb boundary amendments in June 2023 and November 2024 realigned Airds' edges with Bradbury and Campbelltown.

Riley Park on Riverside Drive — a large neighbourhood sports park with a synthetic cricket pitch and two soccer fields, in Airds (Campbelltown City Council). Note that medians here increasingly reflect the Airds–Bradbury renewal: as the old public housing stock is demolished and replaced with private and affordable homes, sales are dominated by newer, smaller-lot dwellings (houses about 65% of stock on small-to-medium lots; AusPropertyFinder). The 2021 census profile (low household incomes, high single-parent share) predates most of the renewal turnover. New Developments

Newbrook — the Landcom and Homes NSW masterplanned renewal of Airds, transforming about 92 hectares of the former housing-commission estate into a modern, socially mixed community; construction of the first 94 residential lots began in late 2025 (Landcom; Landcom community newsletter July 2025). The wider Airds–Bradbury Renewal Project is rebuilding the estate — roughly 94% public housing before renewal — into about 2,100 modern social, affordable and private homes by around 2030, with public housing falling to about 30% of the area, under a Voluntary Planning Agreement with Campbelltown City Council. Suburb boundary amendments in June 2023 and November 2024 realigned the Airds–Bradbury border as renewal areas were transferred between the suburbs.

Jobs & Local Economy

Local employment is community-service based: the suburb's three public schools (Airds High, John Warby and Briar Road primaries), the WorkVentures Connect Centre running free training and employment programs, the Airds/Bradbury Men's Shed, and the Airds Village shops. Most residents commute to the Campbelltown–Macarthur jobs hub in the adjacent suburb of Campbelltown — the town centre, Macarthur Square retail and Campbelltown Hospital — with the 884/883 buses and T8 rail corridor providing the links.
