Alexandria, NSW 2015

Industrial-heritage inner-city suburb about 4–5 km south of the Sydney CBD in the City of Sydney LGA, roughly 3.5 km from Central station. Alexandria was one of Sydney's great manufacturing and brickmaking suburbs — the former Bedford Brickworks now sit inside Sydney Park, and factories, warehouses and the old municipality (1868, merged into the City of Sydney 1949) shaped its streetscape of terraces, working-class cottages and vast industrial sheds along Botany Road and Mitchell Road. Alexandria has no railway station — it is served by Transdev John Holland bus routes to the Sydney CBD along its main roads, and is close to several stations on its borders: St Peters, Erskineville and Redfern on the T8/South Coast corridor, and Green Square station in adjacent Zetland/Waterloo at the suburb's north-east corner. Bus routes 308, 348 and 370 stop near Sydney Park on the suburb's western side, and route 355 passes through the Alexandria–Erskineville area to Bondi Junction.

Schools

Alexandria Park Community School — NSW government K–12 school on Park Road, formed in December 2001 from the amalgamation of Waterloo and Cleveland Street high schools and expanded in 2003 to absorb Redfern, Waterloo and Alexandria public schools; it is partially academically selective and had more than 1,100 enrolments. The school's 2020s masterplan is being delivered in stages to cater for 1,000 primary and up to 1,200 secondary students.

Shopping & Amenities

The Danks Street strip on the suburb's northern edge is Alexandria's food and design heart — cafes, restaurants (e.g. Ora) and galleries that helped earn the suburb its creative reputation (sydneyspots; OpenTable). The South Eveleigh retail and dining precinct sits just across the northern border in adjacent Eveleigh, on the opposite side of the rail line from Alexandria.
