Alfords Point, NSW 2234

Tiny, leafy residential peninsula suburb in southern Sydney about 28 km south-west of the Sydney CBD, within the Sutherland Shire local government area and sharing postcode 2234 with Menai, Bangor and Illawong. It is among the smallest suburbs in the Shire — roughly 2 km² and around 3,500 residents (Highland Property), with 3,131 people at the 2021 census, 76.1% born in Australia. Alfords Point sits on the southern bank of the Georges River, almost completely surrounded by bushland of the Georges River National Park, with Brushwood Drive the only road in and out and Alfords Point Road running its eastern edge up to the Alfords Point Bridge. An affluent, quiet, owner-occupier stronghold — 96% of homes are owner-occupied, median age 43 and SEIFA advantage in the top decile (quickproperty) — and notably home to former Australian cricket captains Steve Waugh and Steve Smith.

Alfords Point has no railway station and public transport is bus-based. The suburb is reached by one road: Alfords Point Road runs inside its eastern border south to north onto the Alfords Point Bridge across the Georges River towards Padstow ; the twin road bridges (first opened 7 September 1973, second opened 22 August 2008, three lanes each way) connect Sutherland Shire with Canterbury-Bankstown, and the bus routes that cross them — U-Go Mobility routes 960 (Bankstown to Sutherland) and 962 (Bankstown to Miranda), both via Padstow and Menai — pass along the Alfords Point Road edge of the suburb. The nearest railway stations are Padstow and Revesby on the East Hills line (T8 Airport & South Line), across the river in adjoining Padstow/Padstow Heights/Revesby Heights and reached by bus or car over the bridge.

Schools

Alfords Point Public School — NSW government K–6 primary on Brushwood Drive, the suburb's only school, described as community-oriented and often hosting community events. The Alfords Point Pre-School Kindergarten (early learning centre, opposite the shops) also operates in the suburb under the Blessed By Bubs/Best Kidz banner. There is no high school in Alfords Point; secondary students are served by Menai High School in the adjoining suburb of Menai, which the NSW Department of Education describes as serving 'the Menai, Alfords Point and Illawong areas' (NSW School Infrastructure).

Shopping & Amenities

Very limited local facilities: a small group of shops on Brushwood Drive adjacent to the public school — a hair salon, pharmacy, convenience store, Charcoal Chicken & Pizza take-away and the Menai Dance Centre. Alfords Point Community Centre at Narina Park can be hired from Sutherland Shire Council. Aggregator data shows no supermarket and no cafes in the suburb — one pharmacy and one GP clinic (quickproperty OSM). For shopping, residents head to the Menai town centre precinct in the adjoining suburb of Menai — the suburb was developed alongside the Menai Town Centre initiative — or across the bridge to Padstow and Bankstown.

Parks & Outdoors

The suburb's drawcard is its natural setting: it sits on the southern bank of the Georges River and is nearly completely surrounded by bushland of the Georges River National Park, with many walking tracks and firetrails popular with locals in summer. Sporting and recreation space comes from two ovals — Narina Park on Coachwood Crescent (which also hosts the Alfords Point Community Centre) and Casuarina Road Oval on Casuarina Road — used for soccer and cricket in local competitions. The Alfords Point Bridge spans the Georges River along the suburb's northern edge, and the bushland fringe is bushfire-prone, with the 1994 eastern seaboard fires among the most damaging to homes neighbouring the national park.

The major infrastructure event was the duplication of the Alfords Point Bridge — the second bridge opened 22 August 2008, taking the crossing to three lanes each way.
