Ambarvale, NSW 2560

Predominantly residential family suburb of south-western Sydney, 55 km south-west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Campbelltown LGA and part of the Macarthur region, lying south of Campbelltown between Bradbury and Rosemeadow. The name comes from an 1816 property of former convict Samuel Larkin; the suburb's farms were sold for housing in 1972 and the new suburb officially opened in 1976. It contains a mix of public and private housing, with streets named after Charles Dickens characters such as Copperfield Drive, Havisham Way and Nickleby Way, and the majority of dwellings are detached houses built in the 1970s and 1980s. At the 2021 census Ambarvale had 7,254 residents — 67% born in Australia, 6.9% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander — and data trackers describe a young-family demographic with couples with children the dominant household type and children aged 0–9 the largest age group.

Ambarvale has no railway station in the suburb. Macarthur station — on the T8 Airport & South Line — sits just north of the suburb on Menangle Road in the adjacent suburb of Campbelltown, near the hospital and university precinct; NSW TrainLink services also stop there. Bus services run by Transit Systems link Ambarvale with Campbelltown from Kellicar Road (under the railway bridge) on routes 870–874, 886–889 and 890–898.

Note that the school called Ambarvale High School is not in Ambarvale — it is located in the adjacent suburb of Rosemeadow.

Western Sydney University's Campbelltown campus — in the adjacent suburb of Campbelltown, at the corner of Narellan Road and Gilchrist Drive just north of Ambarvale's boundary, within the same health and education precinct as Campbelltown Hospital and Macarthur station (Western Sydney University; Campbelltown City Council).

Shopping & Amenities

The suburb's local shopping is centred on an ALDI-anchored shopping centre on Woodhouse Drive, completed in early 2010 on the site of the old centre, beside the Ambarvale Tavern. Macarthur Square — one of the largest shopping centres in south-western Sydney, on Gilchrist Drive in the adjacent suburb of Campbelltown — is just north of Ambarvale.
