Arcadia, NSW 2159

Semi-rural suburb of Sydney 42 km north-west of the CBD, in the local government area of Hornsby Shire on the rural northern edge of the Hills District belt. At the 2021 census it had 1,475 residents, 79.6% of them born in Australia, with 88.1% speaking only English at home. The district was settled from the 1810s (known as Upper Galston, then Galston Heights) and became orchard country — by the mid-1890s Arcadia, Galston and Dural produced more oranges than any other area in the state, with the Fagan family among the early citrus growers (Dictionary of Sydney). Named after the pastoral paradise of Greek mythology and adopted from the local public school's 1895 name, Arcadia remains a quiet, country-feel enclave of farms, paddocks, large allotments, remnant bushland and unsealed roads north of Dural and Galston.

Car-dependent rural suburb with no railway station and only limited public bus services. Arcadia Road is the main road through the suburb, running south to Galston and heading north into Bay Road towards Berrilee and Berowra Waters, with Cobah Road leading north to Fiddletown. The main public bus service is CDC NSW route 638, which links Berowra Waters and Berrilee with Castle Hill or Pennant Hills through the Galston–Arcadia corridor and runs mainly around school and commuter peaks ; residents otherwise drive to Hornsby or Pennant Hills for rail. Arcadia Public School — NSW government primary school (Kindergarten to Year 6) in the suburb, opened in 1895 and the source of the suburb's name. Northholm Grammar School — independent co-educational K–12 school in the Anglican tradition, founded 1983, at 79 Cobah Road within the suburb.

Arcadia has no shopping village of its own — retail is limited to scattered small businesses such as a roadside restaurant/café and specialist rural trades along Arcadia Road (White Pages Arcadia business listings). Everyday shopping and services sit in the adjacent Galston village centre on Galston Road at the Arcadia Road junction, including the Galston Shopping Village and Bendigo Bank branch. Arcadia Park on Arcadia Road is an 18.8-hectare open area of playing fields, passive reserve and a pocket of Sydney turpentine-ironbark forest, supporting red-crowned toadlets, powerful owls, swamp wallabies and fruit bats; it also hosts the Arcadia–Berrilee Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade, established 1952 (Dictionary of Sydney). Farms, paddocks and a number of unsealed roads give the suburb its country character, and its quiet bush edges led churches to establish retreats here, including a Benedictine monastery and the Wesley Central Mission complex at Vision Valley (Dictionary of Sydney). The suburb sits at the head of Calabash Creek, with bushland to the north-east stretching towards Berrilee and the Berowra valley.
