Artarmon, NSW 2064

Leafy residential suburb on the lower North Shore about 9 km north-west of the Sydney CBD, in the City of Willoughby local government area. It takes its name from 'Artarmon', the family estate in Ireland of William Gore — provost marshal under Governor Bligh — who was granted 150 acres here in 1810, following initial land grants to soldiers and emancipists in 1794; nearby Gore Hill is named after him. At the 2021 census Artarmon had 9,417 residents, with the top countries of birth China 10.3%, India 7.4%, Hong Kong 3.2%, England 3.0% and Japan 2.0%, and Mandarin (12.4%) and Cantonese (6.6%) the most common languages after English — a genuinely multicultural village. The suburb mixes heritage-era family homes east of the railway line with apartment blocks to its west and an industrial pocket south of the Gore Hill Freeway, yet keeps a leafy village feel centred on the Hampden Road shopping strip opposite Artarmon station and restaurants along Wilkes Avenue. Households skew to professional couples with children, and the 2021 median weekly household income of $2,420 ran well above the national median of $1,829.

Artarmon railway station is on the North Shore railway line (T1) of the Sydney Trains network, with direct city services roughly every 5–10 minutes. Buses to the Sydney CBD operate from the Pacific Highway, and local services link Chatswood via Mowbray Road and the Pacific Highway, Northbridge and Willoughby via Artarmon Road, St Leonards via Hampden Road and Lane Cove via the Pacific Highway. The Gore Hill Freeway meets the Pacific Highway at Artarmon, giving fast road access south to the city.

Artarmon Public School — NSW government primary school opened in 1910 and one of Sydney's most in-demand public schools, best known as the only school in the state with two Opportunity Classes (OC — academically selective primary extension classes); its OC places topped state rankings in 2018, and its OC intake is being cut from 60 to 30 places from 2025. The suburb has no high school of its own; secondary students typically attend government high schools in the immediately adjacent suburbs, including Chatswood High School (comprehensive, Years 7–12, in Chatswood) and Willoughby Girls' High School.

The village centre clusters around the station: the shopping street on Hampden Road, between Jersey Road and Brand Street, sits across from the railway station with everyday shops and services, while restaurants line Wilkes Avenue on the station's eastern side. Artarmon Public Library is one of the City of Willoughby's branch libraries, and the public broadcaster SBS has its Sydney television and radio studios in Herbert Street. The heritage-listed Chatswood Reservoirs No. 1 and No. 2 stand at 559 Pacific Highway on the suburb's fringe. Local colour: the Artarmon Post Office, opened in December 1909, closed permanently on 12 March 2025 despite community backlash.

Artarmon Park was part of William Gore's original estate and is named after Ardthelmon ('Artramon') Castle, the Gore family's Irish home. Artarmon Reserve received a new playground around 2020 — flying fox, embankment slides, climbing structures, trampolines and a basket swing plus picnic shelters — and stays popular with local families. The heritage-listed Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery, established 19 May 1868 and one of the oldest and largest remaining cemeteries in metropolitan Sydney, sits on the Pacific Highway at the suburb's western Gore Hill edge, adjoining St Leonards. Just east of the suburb, across the border in Naremburn, the bushland of Flat Rock Gully follows Flat Rock Creek down toward the harbour.
