Badgerys Creek, NSW 2555

Badgerys Creek — also known as Badgery's Creek or Aerotropolis — is a semi-rural suburb about 41 km west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Liverpool, part of the Greater Western Sydney region and the site of Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, which began freight operations on 26 July 2026 with passenger services due to start 25 October 2026. Named for James Badgery, who was granted 840 acres here in 1806, the suburb shrank dramatically after the 1986 decision to build Sydney's second airport on its land: government property buy-backs and airport noise concerns cut the population from about 1,560 in 1981 to just 168 at the 2021 census. A south-eastern portion of the suburb was gazetted into the new suburb of Bradfield in March 2023, and the remaining land is a mix of airport infrastructure, resumed acreage, CSIRO research land and a small residual rural settlement — a place whose character is being completely remade by the airport and Aerotropolis build-out.

No railway station and no train yet — the Sydney Metro–Western Sydney Airport line is being commissioned with two stations inside the airport complex (Airport Terminal and Airport Business Park), but services had not begun as of September 2026 and the line is reported to open around 2027, linking to St Marys on the T1 line. The suburb's road access was transformed by the toll-free M12 Motorway, which runs through the suburb roughly parallel to Elizabeth Drive and opened to traffic on 14 March 2026, linking the Westlink M7 with The Northern Road via a free Elizabeth Drive interchange. Public buses are limited but serve stops along Badgerys Creek Road and Elizabeth Drive — including an 'Airport Terminus' stop near the airport on route 872 — and Transport for NSW is delivering 'New Bus Services for Western Sydney' with Badgerys Creek Road surface works to support bus access to the airport and Bradfield.

Schools

Badgerys Creek no longer has a school: the suburb's only primary school, Badgerys Creek Public School (established 1895), was decommissioned in 2014 because its site lay within the airport construction area, and its two nearby churches with cemeteries were also relocated. Families in the small remaining residential pocket rely on schools in surrounding suburbs rather than within Badgerys Creek itself.

Shopping & Amenities

There is no village shopping centre left in the suburb — the Badgerys Creek Post Office closed in 1989, and the commercial-area description of the modern suburb is dominated by non-retail uses north of Elizabeth Drive: the CSIRO research station, the University of Sydney MacGarvie Smith Veterinary Farm, a landfill depot, a brickworks and Telstra-owned land, with the Hubertus Liverpool Rifle Club also located in the suburb. The airport terminal's retail precinct — roughly 7,000 m² of shops and 2,300 m² of food and beverage across 20+ outlets — is due to open with passenger services on 25 October 2026, and day-to-day essentials are currently found at the Kemps Creek strip on Elizabeth Drive just to the east and at Luddenham village to the north-west.

Parks & Outdoors

An open, rural landscape centred on waterways: Badgerys Creek (the watercourse) flows north into a reservoir in the suburb's north, and South Creek forms the eastern boundary; the western boundary follows Oaky Creek and Cosgrove Creek. Badgerys Creek Park is the suburb's local park, and the land rises to Mills Hill, Raymond Hill and Anchau, though much of the former paddock country is now airport airfield, terminal and construction land. The climate station here recorded Australia's notable 50.1°C reading in January 2020.

The suburb had only 168 residents at the 2021 census and datasets record about 5 sales a year at most, almost all of them large parcels (2,000–242,000 m²) rather than houses: recent recorded sales include 205 Lawson Rd for $20,625,000 (39,560 m²), 35 Martin Rd for $11,750,000 (20,000 m²) and 230 Martin Rd for $7,913,179 (242,800 m²), alongside multi-million-dollar government-related acquisitions of airport-adjacent land on Elizabeth Drive (proplo). Roughly $1.5–2.5M figures sometimes quoted for the suburb do not match recorded sales: land-inclusive prices are far higher and far more volatile because almost every transaction is acreage tied to airport/Aerotropolis speculation or resumption. Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport — the $5.3 billion, 24-hour airport inside the suburb (1,780 ha, single 3.7 km runway, Multiplex-built terminal): freight operations began 26 July 2026 with Qantas Freight, and the first passenger flight (Jetstar JQ362 to the Gold Coast) departs 25 October 2026, with Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines services following later in 2026 (Minister for Infrastructure; West Sydney.com.au). M12 Motorway — opened 14 March 2026 through the suburb, giving the airport a toll-free freeway link to the M7. Sydney Metro–Western Sydney Airport line — Airport Terminal and Airport Business Park stations are being built inside the airport complex in-suburb, with services reported to begin around 2027. Adjacent Aerotropolis growth: Bradfield City Centre, gazetted in March 2023 from Badgerys Creek's south-eastern land, is being delivered in stages — Central Park and the first commercial buildings from 2026 — as the 114 ha core of the 11,200 ha Western Sydney Aerotropolis, with the Northern Gateway precinct fronting the M12 corridor.

Jobs & Local Economy

Aviation and airport operations are the suburb's anchor future industry: WSI targets 50% local employment in operations once passenger services begin, and construction of the airport and its precinct has supported more than 11,000 direct and indirect jobs (Western Sydney Trades; West Sydney.com.au). Freight and logistics are already live through the airport's 24-hour cargo precinct and the M12 corridor, and construction trades are in heavy demand across the airport, terminal and surrounding Aerotropolis precincts into the 2026–2030 construction pipeline (Western Sydney Trades). The airport terminal will add retail, food and hospitality jobs from October 2026 (West Sydney.com.au). Agriculture and CSIRO/University of Sydney research operations remain the other land uses north of Elizabeth Drive.
