Balgowlah, NSW 2093

Established, leafy suburb about 12 km north-east of the Sydney CBD, sitting on the ridge above North Harbour where the higher, southern side of the suburb catches harbour views; 'Balgowlah' is said to be an Aboriginal word meaning 'north harbour' and the area was known as Little Manly in early European settlement. Balgowlah is a family-oriented, village-style suburb on Manly's doorstep: the main street is Condamine Street (continuing into Sydney Road), anchored by the Stockland Balgowlah shopping centre, with the North Harbour Reserve picnic parkland at its southern end. At the 2021 census it had 8,068 residents, 65.2% of them born in Australia, and its quiet residential streets, federation and interwar housing and quick bus links to Manly, Warringah Mall and the city make it a long-standing family favourite.

Public transport is bus-only — Balgowlah has no railway station, ferry wharf or light rail. It is a key bus junction: most Northern Beaches bus services run through the suburb en route to Manly, Westfield Warringah Mall, Seaforth and the city. Direct CBD express services include route 168X (Balgowlah to City Wynyard via North Balgowlah) and route 173X (Warringah Mall to City Wynyard via Balgowlah shops), which head across the Spit Bridge. Northern Beaches Council also runs the free 'Hop Skip Jump' community shuttle service through the suburb.

St Cecilia's Catholic Primary School — Catholic systemic K–6 primary at 59 Seaview Street, Balgowlah, which has since amalgamated with St Kieran's in neighbouring Manly Vale. Northern Beaches Secondary College Balgowlah Boys Campus — NSW government boys' secondary school (years 7–12) at 27 Maretimo Street, Balgowlah, founded in 1954 and part of the Northern Beaches Secondary College network (School Choice; Better Education; NBSC). Balgowlah Heights Public School — NSW government primary school just over the boundary in adjacent Balgowlah Heights.

Village shopping lines Condamine Street and Sydney Road, anchored by Stockland Balgowlah — a Coles-anchored centre with roughly 62 specialty retailers plus a fitness centre, which opened in July 2009 on the site of the old Totem Centre (1959) and is still known locally as 'the Totem'. Harvey Norman and Bunnings bulky-goods retail sit on the Sydney Road edge of the village, and smaller remnants of the suburb's pre-1960s corner shops survive. The Condamine Street strip continues into neighbouring Manly Vale to the north, and Westfield Warringah Mall at Brookvale — the region's biggest centre — is a short bus ride away via the services that run through Balgowlah.

North Harbour Reserve on Condamine Street, south of the shopping centre, is a popular picnic spot for large groups and sits on the scenic walk that runs from Manly through Fairlight, Balgowlah, Balgowlah Heights and Clontarf to The Spit. Forty Baskets Beach — a sheltered harbour beach with a swimming enclosure on The Spit to Manly walkway — can be reached from the Balgowlah side along the shoreline from North Harbour Reserve or via stairs off Beatty Street. Just over the boundary in Balgowlah Heights, the Dobroyd Head headland of Sydney Harbour National Park offers heathland walking trails and the Arabanoo lookout with views across North Harbour (NSW National Parks; Hello Manly).
