Banksia, NSW 2216

St George suburb guide — property, transport, schools and lifestyle

Compact, mainly residential suburb 12 km south of the Sydney CBD in the St George area of Bayside Council; at the 2021 census it had 3,277 residents, with established, low-density housing dominated by separate houses plus some medium-density blocks of flats. Banksia is small and tightly settled — it developed rapidly after its railway station opened on 21 October 1906, much of the housing is early-20th-century, and the suburb carries a commercial and light-industrial fringe along the Princes Highway and West Botany Street corridor, where the heritage-listed Arncliffe Market Gardens site (212 West Botany Street) recalls the area's market-garden past. It is multicultural: 52.5% of residents were born in Australia, the next most common birthplaces were North Macedonia (6.5%) and China (3.4%), and 45.3% spoke only English at home. Community anchors include the Banksia Hotel and the heritage St Savvas of Kalymnos Orthodox Church, the former Banksia Free Church.

Transport

Banksia railway station on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line (opened 21 October 1906), sited between Arncliffe and Rockdale stations on the Illawarra line, with direct trains to the city running about every 15 minutes. Transit Systems route 420 also services Banksia, running between Westfield Burwood and Mascot station. The Princes Highway commercial strip runs through the suburb's western side, and the M5 is reachable via adjacent Arncliffe or Rockdale.

Schools

No school campus is located inside Banksia itself — the ACARA school register for the area lists no government or non-government school within the suburb, and primary-aged children attend schools in adjacent suburbs: local agent guides say most of Banksia falls within Arncliffe Public School's catchment (Arncliffe is directly adjacent), with St Francis Xavier's Catholic Primary also in Arncliffe and Rockdale Public School in adjacent Rockdale as nearby options (Kalinovski school catchment guide, Mar 2026; ACARA via GDP). There is no local high school; the same guide reports secondary students travelling to high schools in neighbouring Bexley and Kogarah, including selective Sydney Technical High School in Bexley (Kalinovski).

Shopping & Amenities

Banksia's shopping centre is a small group of shops on Railway Street beside the station — Banksia Bakery, a take-away, a convenience store, a chemist, Australia Post and several hairdressers — and the commercial strip continues into the adjacent suburbs of Arncliffe and Rockdale. Local landmarks include the Banksia Hotel, the heritage St Savvas of Kalymnos Orthodox Church and the National Film and Sound Archive's Sydney premises. For bigger retail, civic and dining precincts residents walk or ride one stop to Rockdale (adjacent) or head to the Brighton-Le-Sands bay-side strip, also adjacent.

Parks & Outdoors

Banksia has no large park of its own — it is a compact, densely built strip of houses and flats — so locals use open space in the adjacent suburbs: Kyeemagh Reserve and the Cooks River foreshore, where the river reaches Botany Bay at Kyeemagh (the river flows through to Botany Bay at Kyeemagh — Dictionary of Sydney), with the paved Cooks River shared path running from Kyeemagh upstream toward Canterbury (AllTrails); and Lady Robinsons Beach at Brighton-Le-Sands, on Botany Bay directly to the south-east of Banksia.

Property Market

The median house price in Banksia was around $1,852,500 (median house price, 38 sales, 12 months to May 2026, CoreLogic via YIP); realestate.com.au suburb data logged the median house price at $1,800,000 on 29 sales in the past 12 months (mid-2026). See our full Sydney property price map for how the suburb compares across the city. House medians cluster around $1.6–1.85M depending on tracker: CoreLogic via YIP logged $1,852,500 (38 sales), realestate.com.au logged $1,800,000 (29 sales), AusPropertyInsights put the house median at $1,790,000 and Smart Property Investment around $1,800,000, while one local agent's figure was about $1.6M. Demand is strong for the size of the market — Domain reported Banksia as one of only a handful of suburbs nationally with a 100% auction clearance rate for the year. Note postcode 2216 is shared with Rockdale, Brighton-Le-Sands and Kyeemagh, so loosely filtered listings bleed across suburbs. Houses dominate (apartments are only about 16.2% of stock per strata data, AusPropertyInsights), and the mix includes older detached homes alongside medium-density blocks of flats.

New Developments

There is no large development pipeline inside Banksia; activity is incremental renewal, with small in-planning projects listed at 345 Princes Highway, Banksia and 116 Hattersley Street, Banksia, while the bigger mixed-use proposals sit across the border in adjacent Rockdale — e.g. a planned 13-storey, 129-apartment development at 588–592 Princes Highway. Bayside Council's wider push to restrict apartments to mixed-use and high-density zones also shapes what can be built in this mostly low-density suburb.

Jobs & Local Economy

Local employment is modest and localised: retail and service jobs in the Railway Street shops and along the commercial strip that continues into adjacent Arncliffe and Rockdale, plus light-industrial and trades activity around the West Botany Street corridor shared with neighbouring suburbs — an area whose industrial past is captured by the heritage-listed Arncliffe Market Gardens site in Banksia. Many working residents commute to the Sydney CBD, about 17 minutes away by direct T4 train, and Rockdale's and Kogarah's larger employment and health precincts are one to two stops down the line.
