Banksmeadow is a small (3 km²) heavy-industrial suburb on the northern shore of Botany Bay, roughly 11 km south of the Sydney CBD, in the Eastern Suburbs region under Bayside Council. At the 2021 census just 508 people lived here, and the suburb has no residential land to speak of: former homes were bulldozed to make way for business parks, and Domain (2018) famously described it as 'the Sydney suburb with two pubs, a bakery but no-one lives there' — a place where lots of people work (port, logistics, Kellogg's, Orica) but almost nobody lives. It is dominated by industry tied to the adjoining Port Botany precinct, with the Kellogg's factory's white grain silos dominating the skyline since 1928 and companies such as Toll, Orica and ANJ Container Services based here.

Transport
There is no passenger railway station in Banksmeadow; the Sydenham–Botany goods railway (the dedicated Port Botany freight line) crosses the suburb to reach the port's container terminals. Bus services run along Botany Road on the suburb's edge — principally Transdev John Holland routes 309 (Redfern–Green Square–Botany–Port Botany) and 310, with Banksmeadow stops such as 'Botany Rd after Foreshore Rd', plus limited peak/school services (e.g. 744E, 667E, 669E).

None physically in the suburb — Banksmeadow is industrial and contains no school sites. Despite its name, Banksmeadow Public School (established 1881) sits at the corner of Wiggins and Trevelyan Streets in the immediately adjoining suburb of Botany, serving the surrounding area.
Shopping & Amenities
Industrial-era services rather than retail: the Pier Hotel, a longstanding working-men's pub on Botany Road that broadcasts every South Sydney Rabbitohs game ; the Discovery Cove Café inside the Goodman business park of the same name; and an artisan bakery/café that moved from Kings Cross to Banksmeadow in 2003. The nine-hole Botany Golf Club and its clubhouse sit across Botany Road from the Pier Hotel.
Parks & Outdoors
Very limited and industrial-edged: the Foreshore Beach (also called Botany Beach) along the Botany Bay coastline is partly lost to port expansion — a rock seawall now spans a significant stretch and the beach suffers erosion and poor water quality, with Sydney Ports building two groynes to protect the remaining sand. Banksmeadow Park and the Botany Golf Club (created on land reclaimed from the bay in the early 1970s) make up most of the suburb's green space.

Port Botany infrastructure investment dominates activity at the suburb's southern edge: in January 2025 DP World and NSW Ports announced an A$400M investment to double the rail terminal capacity at Port Botany's container terminal (to about 1 million TEU), a project that also serves the adjacent Sydney Logistics Park (myKN/Lloyd's List; Grain Central). Patrick Terminals' ~$190M AutoStrad project, which doubled on-dock rail capacity at its Port Botany terminal, was completed in 2023 (NSW Ports). Closer in, Sydney Ports Corporation work to safeguard the eroding Foreshore Beach — including two new groynes — continues along the suburb's Botany Bay shoreline. Note the port works are physically in the adjacent Port Botany precinct rather than inside Banksmeadow proper.
