Barden Ridge is a leafy, family-oriented residential suburb in the Sutherland Shire, 29 km south of the Sydney CBD on the Woronora River, colloquially known to locals as 'The Ridge' or 'Bardo'. It was carved out of the suburb of Lucas Heights — which had been named for the same ridgetop area — and gazetted as a separate suburb in 1996, taking its name from Alfred Barden, whose pioneering family was associated with the Bangor area before the 1850s. At the 2021 census it had 4,129 residents, with a strongly family and home-owner character. The area has shifted from remote bushland to an established residential suburb, though it has faced several extreme bushfire incidents, most notably an evacuation in the early 2000s.

Transport
Barden Ridge has no railway station — the nearest stations are Sutherland on the Sydney Trains Illawarra line and Padstow on the East Hills line. Local bus services are operated by U-Go Mobility, with route 961 running between Sutherland station and Barden Ridge (terminus stops around David Road/Dawes Place), along the Sutherland–Menai–Barden Ridge corridor. By road, the Bangor Bypass, completed in 2005, takes motorists directly from Sutherland to Barden Ridge via New Illawarra Road rather than through Menai and Bangor, and Heathcote Road lies to the south.
Schools
Barden Ridge has two schools within the suburb. Lucas Heights Community School — NSW government K–12 school at 132 Old Illawarra Road, established in 1992 and described as the only NSW government school from Kindergarten to Year 12 on one site in the metropolitan area (Better Education; NSW Department of Education International). Barden Ridge has no shopping centre of its own — the suburb's retail and dining needs are served by Menai Marketplace in the immediately adjacent suburb of Menai, about a 6-minute drive away, with restaurants also minutes away in neighbouring Bangor and Woronora Heights (Propertybuyer; PlanningAlerts local commentary). In-suburb facilities include St Paul's Anglican Church and the Sutherland Reformed Church, the Barden Lodge Retirement Home (aged care), and the suburb's own NSW Rural Fire Service bushfire brigade station, with police, ambulance and fire stations nearby in Menai. The Ridge Sports Complex, on the western side of New Illawarra Road, is Barden Ridge's major recreation facility: playing fields, netball courts, a men's shed, dog park, BMX track, synthetic athletics track and The Ridge Golf Course with driving range. The suburb is home to sporting clubs including the Barden Ridgebacks Football Club and Netball Club and The Barden Ridge Comets Cricket Team, and an oval at Barden Ridge is the home ground of the Bangor Tigers junior AFL club. Other parks and nature reserves are scattered through the suburb, and Lucas Heights Community School and Shire Christian School also provide playing fields and courts used by the community. Barden Ridge sits on the Woronora River: 'The Needles', a cold-water ria on the river at the suburb's edge, is popular for hiking and mountain biking. As of local reporting the centre had still not been built, with locals noting 'Barden Ridge needs a shopping complex and has waited for one for many years' while Menai Marketplace remains the main shopping destination (PlanningAlerts; The Leader). The Bangor Bypass (completed 2005) was the area's last major infrastructure project.
