Leafy, affluent and one of Sydney's older established suburbs, about 22 km north-west of the CBD: Beecroft is characterised by tree-lined streets, large Federation homes on big blocks and preserved bushland. It was orchard country before the railway arrived in 1886; Sir Henry Copeland named the suburb after the maiden name of his two wives (Hannah and Mary Beecroft, sisters he married in succession), remembered today in Hannah Street and Mary Street. The temperance movement was so strong that Beecroft has never had a hotel, and the Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust (active since 1958) has helped keep the suburb's bushland intact. At the 2021 census Beecroft had 10,291 residents — 60.6% born in Australia — with an average weekly household income of $2,962, above the national average of $1,746, and 3.0 people per household. Beecroft railway station is on the Main Northern railway line, opened 17 September 1886 and relocated to its present site on 7 March 1892, and is 26.90 km from Central station. It is served by Sydney Trains T9 Northern Line services — Hornsby-bound in one direction and toward the city and on to Gordon via Central in the other — while the Main Northern line also carries intercity and freight trains through the suburb. Beecroft Road, once part of the Metroad 2 arterial system, links the suburb to the M2 Hills Motorway, and bus routes include 553 (Busways) and 651 and 635 (CDC NSW).

Schools

Beecroft Public School — NSW government primary school, established 1897, in the heart of the suburb. Arden Anglican School — independent Anglican school based in Beecroft, whose Lorne House building (designed by George Sydney Jones) is part of the campus. Cheltenham Girls' High School — the local government girls' high school (Years 7–12) is in the immediately adjoining suburb of Cheltenham and is listed by Domain as Beecroft's catchment high school. Wikipedia also groups with Beecroft: Roselea Public School, Epping Heights Public School and St Gerard Majella Catholic Primary School (four primary schools in all) plus Carlingford High School, which sits on the suburb's border with Carlingford.

Shopping & Amenities

The village shopping strip sits between Beecroft Road and the railway station: Beecroft Village (arcade with traditional Old English signage), Hannah Street — the main commercial street, beautified in 2005 — and Beecroft Place at the corner of Hannah Street and Beecroft Road, opened 20 September 2017 with a Woolworths supermarket as its anchor tenant. Beecroft's shopping district was one of the first in NSW to go plastic-bag-free, with Woolworths Beecroft the first Woolworths supermarket in the state to ban plastic bags. The centre is small but serves Beecroft and neighbouring Cheltenham and Epping, with cafes, a bakery, pharmacy and specialty stores around the village. There are no hotels in Beecroft — a legacy of the suburb's temperance history — and for bigger retail trips residents head to Carlingford Court in adjacent Carlingford or the Pennant Hills shops.

Beecroft's leafy character is backed by real bushland: Chilworth Reserve, whose 'Byles Bush' section at the end of York Street has walking tracks, plus trails through other forested reserves, general park space at the Village Green, and the Beecroft lawn tennis club. Wikipedia notes the suburb sits at the upper section of Lane Cove National Park's bushland corridor, and Devlins Creek runs in a bush-lined valley along the suburb's southern fringe, crossing under the M2 near Sutherland Road on the Beecroft–Cheltenham edge. Minimal by Sydney standards — Beecroft is a mature low-density suburb protected by its heritage and bushland character (the Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust has campaigned since 1958 to preserve it). The main recent change was a 2016–17 renewal of part of the village block around Hannah Street and Beecroft Road, where old houses and shops made way for new units and shops delivered as Beecroft Place (opened 20 September 2017, Woolworths-anchored). Domain currently lists just one project in the suburb: Keynote Residences, a small four-dwelling development at 5 Wongala Crescent.

Local employment is modest: the village retail strip (Woolworths-anchored Beecroft Place plus cafes, pharmacy and services), the suburb's schools (Beecroft Public, Arden Anglican and the church congregations) and clubs such as Pennant Hills Golf Club provide the main in-suburb jobs. Most working residents are professionals who commute — the T9 line gives a direct rail run to the Sydney CBD (roughly 35–40 minutes), while the M2 and Pennant Hills Road corridors put Macquarie Park, North Sydney and Parramatta employment areas within a similar drive.
