Belfield, NSW 2191

Belfield is a family-oriented, multicultural suburb about 13 km south-west of the Sydney CBD, in the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. The suburb's name is believed to combine those of its two neighbours, Belmore and Enfield. At the 2021 census it had 6,555 residents — 57.4% born in Australia, with the largest migrant communities from Lebanon (6.0%), China (5.9%), South Korea (3.3%), Italy (2.6%) and Greece (2.0%). The majority of its houses were built after World War II as public housing and have since passed into private ownership, and Australia's first Pizza Hut opened here in April 1970 (closed 1998). Today it mixes post-war homes with modern rebuilds and new apartments along a small Burwood Road village strip, set among residential, light-industrial and commercial pockets.

Belfield has no railway station. It is bus-served, with services running along Burwood Road and Punchbowl Road — for example the bus from Burwood Road at Clarence Street to Campsie Station — and Moovit transit data shows multiple bus routes serving the suburb's streets. The nearest stations to the south, Belmore and Campsie, sit on the former Bankstown railway line corridor, which has been closed since 2024 for conversion to the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project, with construction notifications continuing through 2026 and rail-replacement buses in the interim (Sydney Metro). Burwood station, about 2.5 km north of the suburb centre, remains open on the T2 Inner West & Leppington line and is a short bus ride up Burwood Road.

Schools

Belfield's schools are St Michael's Catholic Primary School — a Sydney Catholic Schools systemic primary that opened in 1959 — and Aspect South East Sydney School, the autism-specific school run by Autism Spectrum Australia. There is no NSW government school in Belfield proper; government high-school options sit in immediately adjacent suburbs, such as Strathfield South High School in neighbouring Strathfield South, with independent schools like All Saints Grammar in adjacent Belmore close by.

Shopping & Amenities

Belfield's village centre is a small group of shops, restaurants, a post office and a hotel on Burwood Road near the intersection of Punchbowl Road, anchored by the historic Belfield Hotel, with a bakery, cafe and pizza bar among the traders. The strip is being renovated with new shops and apartments. For bigger retail, Campsie's main shopping area along Beamish Street — roughly 1.6 km of shops and businesses in an administrative centre of Canterbury-Bankstown Council — is directly adjacent to the south-east.

Parks & Outdoors

Belfield has two notable sporting reserves: Rudd Park, home ground of the Belmore Eagles Soccer Club with two tennis courts, and Cooke Park, home ground of the Enfield Federals rugby league club. The Cooks River and its tributary Coxs Creek run along the suburb's northern edge — the riverside crescent between Punchbowl Road and the river was part of Belfield until 2023, when it was transferred to the neighbouring suburb of Strathfield South, so the river's green corridor now sits immediately across the border.
