Berowra, NSW 2081

Quiet, scenic bush suburb of Northern Sydney about 36 km north of the Sydney CBD and around 40 km south-west of Gosford, in the Hornsby Shire local government area; 'Berowra' is a Darug word meaning 'place of many shells', after the shell middens along Berowra Creek. Lying at 215 m altitude on rugged terrain surrounded by bushland, it borders the national parks of both Berowra Valley and Ku-ring-gai Chase. At the 2021 census the population was 4,762, living almost entirely in separate houses (93.9% of occupied private dwellings), with a small village character clustered around the railway station.

Berowra railway station is on the Main Northern railway line and is the northern terminus of Sydney Trains' T1 North Shore Line (city–Berowra via Gordon), also served by NSW TrainLink Central Coast & Newcastle Line intercity services to Sydney, Hornsby and Newcastle. The Pacific Highway runs through the suburb and the Pacific Motorway (M1) runs along its eastern side, between Berowra and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. The suburb lies off the highway on the high bushland plateau, with local roads leading down to Berowra Creek and Berowra Waters.

The immediately adjacent suburb of Berowra Heights adds two more primary schools shared with Berowra: Wideview Public School and St Bernard's Catholic Primary School. There is no high school within Berowra itself; secondary students travel to the Hornsby area high schools to the south.

Shopping & Amenities

Berowra is largely residential with a small retail precinct lining the Pacific Highway near the railway station. The main shopping complex for the wider area — the Turner Road centre in Berowra Heights, opened in May 2007 — is in the immediately adjacent suburb. Community life is organised around the Berowra District Hall, churches (St Mark's Anglican, Berowra Baptist) and a long list of local clubs including the Berowra Woodchop Festival, held every second Sunday of August since 1995.

Berowra Creek edges the suburb's western bushland, and Berowra's own playing fields and reserves (including the parkland viewed from the station escarpment) support the local cricket, soccer and netball clubs.
