Bexley, NSW 2207

St George suburb guide — property, transport, schools and lifestyle

Established family suburb in southern Sydney, 14 km south-west of the Sydney CBD, in the Bayside Council LGA and part of the St George area. Bexley is largely quiet, low-rise residential — the 2021 census counted 19,646 residents across about 7,600 dwellings, with 52.7% born in Australia. Its village heart is the Forest Road shopping strip, and it is positioned by local agents and vendors as a family suburb with tree-lined streets, park access and easy reach of Rockdale and Kogarah shops, schools and stations about 2 km away. The suburb dates to 1822 and retains a mix of Federation-era and post-war housing on large blocks, giving it a settled, established feel compared with the denser Rockdale town centre next door.

Transport

Bexley has no railway station — it is served by Transit Systems NSW and U-Go Mobility bus services running mainly along Forest Road and Stoney Creek Road. The nearest train stations are Rockdale and Kogarah, both on the T4 line and about 2 km from central Bexley, typically reached by a short bus hop or drive.

Schools

Bexley Public School — NSW government primary school at 330-354 Forest Road in the suburb (school listing; Better Education rates it 74 overall). St Gabriel's Catholic Primary School Bexley — systemic Catholic primary school in Bexley; the school and adjoining St Gabriel's church were blessed and opened on 29 January 1939 (school website). Just over the border in neighbouring Bexley North is Bexley North Public School (NSW government primary). There is no high school within Bexley; secondary students typically travel to neighbouring Kogarah (directly adjoining), where Kogarah High School is the local government Years 7-12 option.

Shopping & Amenities

The main shopping strip, usually known as 'Bexley Shopping Centre', runs along Forest Road and is the suburb's commercial and social heart — the former Commonwealth Bank has found new use as office space and an IGA supermarket occupies the former Coles Variety Store site, with banks, local shops and eateries along the strip. Bexley North's small village shopping centre, around the intersection of Bexley Road with Slade Road and Shaw Street near Bexley North station, sits just over the northern border and serves northern Bexley residents too.

Parks & Outdoors

Bexley Park, at 95 Stoney Creek Road, is a large grassy open space with a popular children's playground off Donnan Street — flying fox, wooden climbing sculptures and winding bike paths — and room for picnics and parties (Bayside Council park booking page). Evatt Park at 23A Basil Road is a neighbourhood park popular with dog owners (council data via doghappiness; Pacer). On Bexley's northern fringe, the Bardwell Creek valley parklands in adjoining Bardwell Valley and Bexley North offer creekside walking trails and open space (Walk & Talk Therapy Bexley North; AllTrails Bardwell Creek Walk). Bexley itself is landlocked — it has no harbour or beach frontage; the Cooks River and Wolli Creek corridors sit beyond its northern boundary.

Property Market

The median house price in Bexley was around About $1.74–1.85M (2026): YIP lists a $1,805,000 median house price (136 sales in 12 months); michaelkalinovski puts it at $1.85M (+8% annual growth, ~27 days on market, June 2026); auspropertyfinder at $1.8M; and OnTheHouse's automated valuation median was $1,741,336 as at 31 July 2026 (mid-2026). See our full Sydney property price map for how the suburb compares across the city. Trackers spread on houses ; units range from ~$695K (kalinovski) to ~$765K to $825,708. Over five years OnTheHouse records house values up 20.1% and units up 19.81% (as at 31 July 2026). Stock is predominantly established freestanding family homes on large blocks, which is why premium results like the $2.68M sale at 117 St Georges Road in November 2025 (Raine & Horne) reflect redevelopment potential rather than typical pricing.

New Developments

Bexley's change is small-scale infill rather than towers: there are no major apartment or town-centre projects in the suburb — growth pressure is concentrated in the Rockdale/Kogarah centres around it. Locally, activity shows up as incremental redevelopment of the established housing stock on large blocks, evidenced by top-end sales such as the $2.68M November 2025 result at 117 St Georges Road (Raine & Horne), and Bexley is described by HtAG as a 'long-hold capital growth' house market in the Bayside Council area. Any new apartment-style supply is found on the suburb's fringes toward the Rockdale corridor rather than within Bexley's low-rise core.

Jobs & Local Economy

Bexley is primarily a commuter suburb: local employment centres on the Forest Road shops, schools, medical rooms and trades serving the suburb, while the big St George employment hubs are a short trip away — Rockdale's commercial and light-industrial centre and the T4 rail corridor about 2 km east, St George Hospital and the Kogarah health and education precinct to the south, and the Sydney CBD about 14 km north-east. Many Bexley workers commute daily to the city by bus and train.
