Burraneer, NSW 2230

Bayside peninsular suburb of southern Sydney about 26 km south of the Sydney CBD, sitting on Burraneer Point on the north shore of the Port Hacking estuary with Burraneer Bay on its western border and Gunnamatta Bay on its eastern border, in the Sutherland Shire. Woolooware is Burraneer's only land-bordering neighbour; Cronulla lies across Gunnamatta Bay and Dolans Bay, Port Hacking and Caringbah South across Burraneer Bay. It is a mostly residential suburb of predominantly large family homes, some with expansive water views of Port Hacking, and the name Burraneer Bay was recorded by surveyor Robert Dixon in 1827 as 'Burranear Bay'. At the 2021 census it had 3,719 residents, 85.2% born in Australia, with an average weekly household income of $3,490 — well above the NSW average of $1,829 — reflecting its affluent, waterfront character. Former and current residents include cricketers Ricky Ponting, Glenn McGrath and Stuart Clark and rugby league players Paul Gallen and Ricky Stuart.

Burraneer has no railway station; the closest is Woolooware station on the Cronulla branch of the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line, roughly 2 km north in the adjacent suburb of Woolooware. Buses are provided by U-Go Mobility: route 971 runs Cronulla to Hurstville through the area, and route 988 runs Cronulla to Caringbah with a very limited weekday service (4 services a day Cronulla–Caringbah and 2 a day Caringbah–Cronulla). The Burraneer Family Practice sits at the corner of Woolooware and Burraneer Bay Roads, with a petrol station and mechanic directly across the road — though that site falls in the suburb of Woolooware.

Burraneer Bay Public School — NSW government primary (K–6) on Burraneer Bay Road at the corner of Gannons Road at the suburb's southern edge; it was formerly zoned in Woolooware but has officially been part of the suburb of Burraneer since 2008. Our Lady of Mercy Catholic College ('OLMC Burraneer') — Catholic girls' secondary college (Years 7–10) on Dominic Street in the suburb. De La Salle Catholic College Cronulla — the area's Catholic college, located on Cross Street near the Burraneer–Cronulla boundary (senior campus described as co-educational Years 11–12), serving Burraneer families from the adjacent suburb of Cronulla. St Francis De Sales Primary School lies on the border of Burraneer and Woolooware. The main public high school option for the area is Woolooware High School in the immediately adjacent suburb of Woolooware.

Shopping & Amenities

Retail in Burraneer is limited to small local strips: a group of shops and cafes on Woolooware Road between Dominic and Cross Streets, and a smaller group on Burraneer Bay Road at the corner of Gannons Road opposite Burraneer Bay Public School. There is no supermarket in the suburb — residents shop in adjacent Woolooware (Wills Road shops or Bay Central) or the Cronulla town centre across Gunnamatta Bay. The Burraneer Family Practice is at the corner of Woolooware and Burraneer Bay Roads. The Royal Motor Yacht Club is located on Gunnamatta Bay and the Burraneer Bay Marina on Burraneer Bay.

Waterfront living on Port Hacking is Burraneer's defining feature: Burraneer Bay forms the western border and Gunnamatta Bay the eastern border, with boating, sailing and fishing on the estuary, the Burraneer Bay Marina and the Royal Motor Yacht Club on Gunnamatta Bay. Burraneer Bay Park has an area of bushland, a boardwalk, a playground and a bicycle/jogging track, and there are many small park reserves with play equipment, including Binaville Ave Reserve and Rutherford Reserve at the end of Woolooware Road. The Lugano Avenue Small Craft Launching Facility on Burraneer Bay — opened in 2020 by Sutherland Shire Council — provides safe wharf access for kayakers, rowers and paddlers, and there are publicly accessible wharves, beaches and bay accesses such as Hospital Bay Wharf at the end of Gunnamatta Road, Bulls Beach (accessed via Lugano Ave) and Bell Place Beach.
