Residential suburb of the Macarthur region about 70 km south-west of the Sydney CBD, immediately south of Camden's heritage town centre on the far side of the Camden Bypass. The land was part of the Macarthur family's Camden Park estate and was farmed for most of 200 years before Sydney's suburban sprawl reached Camden and areas like Camden South were subdivided into housing blocks. Camden South had 4,595 residents at the 2021 census, with a strongly family-house profile: 79% of households are families, 55% of owner-occupiers hold a mortgage and the average household has 2.8 people. Agents and listing copy pitch it as an established, family-friendly suburb of brick homes and newer estates on Camden's southern edge, a few minutes from the town centre.

Transport
Camden South has no railway station — like the rest of the Camden area, public transport is bus-based. Transit Systems (Sydney's South West bus region) routes 894, 895 and 894X serve stops on the Old Hume Highway and Macarthur Road through the suburb, connecting Camden South with Camden town centre and the Campbelltown–Macarthur corridor, where Macarthur station on the T8 Airport & South line is the closest railhead. Remembrance Driveway (Camden Valley Way) runs through the suburb as the main north–south arterial, with the Old Hume Highway the older alignment.
Schools
Camden South Public School — NSW government primary school (K–6) on the Old Hume Highway within the suburb, a large school of around 744 students with its own official site (camdensth-p.schools.nsw.gov.au; Good Schools Guide; My Choice Schools). Government secondary students from Camden South typically attend Camden High School, in the adjoining suburb of Camden immediately to the north (NSW Department of Education school catchments).
Shopping & Amenities
Retail within Camden South itself is limited to small local services — a small neighbourhood shop strip on Flinders Avenue anchored by a Friendly Grocer convenience store at 54–60 Flinders Avenue (store directory/stop listings). Everyday shopping, dining and services are provided by the Camden town centre in the immediately adjacent suburb of Camden to the north, the historic retail heart of the district along Argyle Street.
Parks & Outdoors
The Nepean River runs along part of Camden South's boundary — the river is visible in the top-right of the suburb's classic aerial photograph, where the Camden Bypass crosses towards Elderslie. The heritage-listed Camden Park Estate and Belgenny Farm — the Macarthur family's 1805 estate, now a major heritage and farm-education precinct — is listed within Camden South on Elizabeth Macarthur Avenue. The suburb itself is established residential streets with mature gardens, remnant rural blocks and bushland along the Old Hume Highway corridor, with rural vistas toward Cawdor and the river flats to the west.
Property Market
The median house price in Camden South was around ~$1.19M (PropTrack median sold price based on 64 house sales in the 12 months to Sep 2026, property.com.au); Cotality AVM median house value $1,201,916 as at 31 July 2026 (OnTheHouse) (mid-2026). See our full Sydney property price map for how the suburb compares across the city. Medians cluster around $1.19M–$1.20M and a year ago sat near $1,117,000, so growth has been strong. Sales volumes are healthy for a suburb this size — 64 house sales (PropTrack) to 71 sales in the past 12 months. Stock is dominated by family homes: established 3–4 bedroom brick houses on 550–900 m² blocks mostly sold in the low-to-mid $1M range, while newer and larger 4–5 bedroom homes in the estate streets reach $1.4M–$1.7M.
New Developments
Camden South is an established suburb where change is mostly infill: new homes on remaining vacant lots and knock-down-rebuild activity along the Old Hume Highway corridor, alongside a handful of newer estate streets on the suburb's southern edge toward the Camden Park–Spring Farm release front. Camden Council directs the LGA's large-scale greenfield growth to the release areas around the historic town — Spring Farm and Elderslie on Camden South's eastern flank — rather than within Camden South itself, keeping the suburb a stable, built-out family area.
Jobs & Local Economy
Camden South is primarily a residential commuter suburb. The nearest concentration of employment is the adjacent Camden township: retail and hospitality in the Argyle Street town centre and Camden Hospital (South Western Sydney Local Health District) on Menangle Road are the main local employers, along with education at Camden South Public School and Camden High School. Many residents commute to the Campbelltown–Macarthur retail, health and employment centres — the region's main jobs hub, reached via Camden Valley Way — and to other South West Sydney growth areas.
