Family-oriented residential suburb on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, about 5 km north of the Sydney CBD, in the North Sydney Council local government area. Development came slowly because of steep topography — the area was known as 'Suspension Bridge' until the 1920s and was the site of Sydney's first sandstone quarry — and today Cammeray is a mix of houses, townhouses and apartments: at the 2016 census 75.8% of dwellings were medium or high density, with 23.3% separate houses. The village feel centres on Miller Street and the Cammeray Square complex, with a small business precinct beside Green Park on Cammeray Road. At the 2021 census Cammeray had 7,088 residents ; households are predominantly childless couples and residents mostly work in professional occupations, with 57.2% of homes owner-occupied. Cammeray has no railway station: public transport is bus-based, with Busways services running through the suburb and Cammeray the last south-bound stop for CBD services that use the Warringah Expressway; buses also connect to North Sydney, Milsons Point and Crows Nest. The Warringah Expressway cuts through the suburb — crossings are at West, Miller, Ernest and Falcon Streets — and gives residents fast car access to the city. The nearest rail is North Sydney railway station on the T1 North Shore line, immediately south in the adjacent suburb of North Sydney.

Schools

Two NSW government primary schools serve the suburb: Cammeray Public School, a K-6 comprehensive co-educational school on Palmer Street on the suburb's northern side (Cammeray Public School), and Anzac Park Public School in the south of the suburb, which opened in 2016. Secondary options sit in the immediately adjacent suburb of North Sydney, including the North Sydney Boys High School and North Sydney Girls High School (selective government high schools) and Marist Catholic College North Shore.

Universities

No university campus is located in Cammeray itself, but the immediately adjacent suburb of North Sydney hosts Australian Catholic University's North Sydney (MacKillop) campus at 40 Edward Street — one of ACU's Sydney campuses (ACU has Sydney campuses at Blacktown, North Sydney and Strathfield) — putting university study within walking distance or a short bus ride of Cammeray's southern edge.

Miller Street is Cammeray's main commercial thoroughfare, lined with restaurants, cafes, the local post office, a petrol station and small businesses, anchored by Cammeray Square, a modern shopping-and-residential complex, while a small business precinct adjacent to Green Park on Cammeray Road adds to the village feel.
