Canley Vale, NSW 2166

Multicultural, family-oriented suburb 30 km west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Fairfield, part of the South Western Sydney region. At the 2021 census it had 10,300 residents, of whom only 34.1% were born in Australia — Vietnam (31.3%) was the top birthplace, Vietnamese the most spoken home language (38.3%, with just 16.0% speaking only English at home) and Buddhism the most common religion (35.4%). The community grew up around its 1878 railway station and a village core that shared the old 'Cabravale' identity with neighbouring Cabramatta — a name still used by local organisations such as the Cabravale Diggers. Today Canley Vale is a close-knit, largely Vietnamese-Australian suburb of post-war-era homes, with a thriving dining strip along Canley Vale Road that Discover Fairfield — the region's tourism body — calls one of the best ways to experience the area's food culture (Discover Fairfield).

Transport

Canley Vale railway station on Railway Parade, opened 15 April 1878 on the Main Southern line about 31 km from Central, is served by Sydney Trains T2 Leppington & Inner West Line and T5 Cumberland Line services to Central and the City Circle, with about 3,388 passenger boardings a day in 2025. The station was upgraded under the Transport Access Program with lifts, an improved entrance and a kiss-and-ride area, completed in November 2021, and sits beside the town centre with a commuter car park. Transit Systems operates one bus route via the station, and the NightRide N50 (Liverpool to Town Hall) stops there overnight.

Canley Vale Public School — NSW government primary school on the site of the suburb's first public school, which opened in 1884 and has remained in operation as a primary school. Lansvale Public School — NSW government primary (K–6) at 37–45 Chancery Street, physically in Canley Vale despite its name (NSW Department of Education school website). Canley Vale High School — NSW government secondary school, Years 7–12. Pal Buddhist School — private co-educational Buddhist school covering both primary and secondary years.

Shopping & Amenities

The Canley Vale Town Centre clusters around Canley Vale Road and the railway station, offering shops, a variety of dining options and accessible on-street and off-street parking (Fairfield City Council). The Canley Vale Road strip is a walkable multicultural dining destination — from broken-rice comfort food and Korean BBQ to hotpot and late dessert bars, all within a short stretch near Canley Vale Station (Discover Fairfield). Westacott Cottage, an 1886-built Victorian house on Railway Parade that fronts the suburb's Wikipedia entry, is home to a volunteer-run Arts and Craft Centre.
