Carlton, NSW 2218

Established, largely residential suburb about 15 km south of the Sydney CBD on the railway between Kogarah and Rockdale, part of the St George area. Settlement followed the opening of the railway to Hurstville in 1884, with the Carlton station platform added in 1887 after local landholders helped fund it, and the station group is now heritage-listed. Carlton is multicultural — at the 2021 census it had 10,631 residents (median age 38) of whom 45.3% were born in Australia, with the next most common birthplaces China (11.3%), Nepal (5.5%), North Macedonia (3.0%) and the Philippines (2.9%), and only 36% speaking only English at home. It has a small village feel centred on the shops flanking the station on Railway Parade and Carlton Parade, a largely low-rise streetscape of detached family houses and older walk-up flats, and is home to the St George Illawarra Dragons NRL club, whose ground — Netstrata Jubilee Stadium at the corner of Jubilee Avenue and Park Street — sits in the suburb.
