Chester Hill, NSW 2162

Multicultural, family-oriented suburb about 25 km west of the Sydney CBD, sharing the 2162 postcode with neighbouring Sefton. At the 2021 census Chester Hill had 14,007 residents, 49.0% born in Australia; the most common countries of birth elsewhere were Vietnam 9.7% and Lebanon 7.5%, with 34.8% of residents Muslim and 28.2% speaking only English at home. Median household income was $1,355 a week — below the national median of $1,746 — pointing to a working and middle-class, largely migrant-background family demographic. It developed from market gardens and orchards into a residential and light-industrial suburb after the Regents Park railway line arrived in 1924, when the station (originally dubbed 'Boroya') opened under the name Chester Hill. Rugby league great Terry Lamb grew up here.

Chester Hill railway station is a heritage-listed station on the Main Southern railway line, served by Sydney Trains T3 Liverpool & Inner West Line services: one platform runs to Central and the City Circle via Regents Park and the other runs to Liverpool. The Sydney Metro Southwest conversion covers only the Bankstown line east of Bankstown (Sydenham–Bankstown, closed since 30 September 2024) — Chester Hill is west of Bankstown on the Main South, so it was never part of the metro conversion and has no metro station; city services have run via Regents Park and Lidcombe since the closure, instead of via Bankstown as they did 2013–2024. The M1 metro to Bankstown had still not opened by mid-2026, with services expected from around October 2026 (The Guardian, July 2026; Brisbane Times). Transit Systems NSW runs five bus routes through the station area under contract to Transport for NSW: 911 (Bankstown–Auburn via Georges Hall), 916 (to Guildford), M91 (Parramatta–Hurstville via Padstow & Chester Hill), S2 (Sefton–Granville) and S4 (to Fairfield via Carramar & Villawood), plus bus links to Parramatta and Bankstown. A Transport for NSW accessibility upgrade — new lift, stairs, elevated walkway and platform works — was completed at the station in July 2026.

Chester Hill Public School — NSW government primary school (years K–6), the suburb's first public school, opened January 1945. Chester Hill North Public School — NSW government primary school (years K–6). Chester Hill High School — NSW government high school (years 7–12). Salamah College — independent Islamic co-educational school established in 2012 on the former RAAF land between Priam and Hector Streets, sister school of Al Amanah College. Sefton High School, the partially selective government high school physically in immediately adjacent Sefton, is also part of Chester Hill's local school cluster, with the two suburbs sharing the 2162 postcode.

Shopping & Amenities

Chester Square is the suburb's main shopping centre, situated behind Waldron Road and catering for the catchment of Chester Hill, Sefton, Birrong and Bass Hill. Amenities in the suburb include the Bankstown City Library Chester Hill branch, Chester Hill Fire Station and a community centre, plus an RSL club, bowling club and community garden. The suburb also has a notable light-industrial component developed along its rail corridor.

Parks and reserves in Chester Hill include Nugent Park, Campbell Hill Reserve, Everley Park and Abbott Park — home of the Chester Hill Youth Cricket Club and the Chester Hill Hornets Junior Rugby League Club. The suburb is not on the metro conversion; its selling points centre on the T3 rail link, the planned Bankstown metro interchange and Chester Square retail.

The most concrete local infrastructure project is the Chester Hill railway station accessibility upgrade under Transport for NSW's Safe Accessible Transport program — a new lift, stairs, elevated walkway, platform levelling and tactile indicators, completed in July 2026. Chester Hill's development heritage is also notable: the former RAAF accommodation site between Priam and Hector Streets was redeveloped into school and community use, now occupied by Salamah College and churches. No large private apartment or town-centre developments in Chester Hill itself were identified at the time of writing.

Chester Hill is primarily a commuter suburb: local employment is anchored by Chester Square retail on Waldron Road, the suburb's schools, light-industrial estates along the rail corridor and civic facilities including the fire station. Most residents commute out — by T3 train to the Sydney CBD, by bus (M91, 911) to the Parramatta and Bankstown employment hubs, and by the 916/S4 routes toward Guildford and Fairfield.
