Quiet, established family suburb roughly 43 km west of the Sydney CBD and one of the easternmost suburbs of the City of Penrith, sitting on the St Marys–Mount Druitt edge of Western Sydney. Colyton is one of the older parts of the St Marys district — the 'Village of Colyton' was subdivided from William Cox's 1819 Crown grant in the 1840s, and the suburb retains a post-war character with homes on large quarter- and third-acre blocks. At the 2021 census it had 8,770 residents, and 95.1% of occupied private dwellings were separate houses — a genuine house-and-yard suburb with almost no unit stock. Transport
Colyton has no railway station — public transport is bus-based, with Busways services linking the suburb to St Marys railway station, Westfield Mount Druitt and Mount Druitt railway station. The nearest rail connection is St Marys station on the T1 Western Line, a few minutes away by bus or car. The Great Western Highway forms Colyton's northern boundary and the M4 Western Motorway its southern boundary, giving residents direct road access to Parramatta and the CBD.

Bennett Road Public School — NSW government K–6 primary school on Bennett Road in Colyton, opened 14 October 1961 to serve the growing St Marys district. Colyton High School — NSW government Years 7–12 comprehensive high school serving Colyton and surrounds; the campus at 37–53 Carpenter Street sits on the border with St Marys (the school's own contact page lists St Marys) and Allhomes lists it in Colyton's government school catchment (Colyton High School website; Allhomes). Note that Colyton Public School, despite its name, is not located in Colyton — it stands across the Great Western Highway in Old Mt Druitt in the neighbouring Mount Druitt area.

Everyday shopping is at the Colyton Shopping Centre, the suburb's small neighbourhood centre, and Colyton also has a Life Education Centre.
