Elderslie, NSW 2570

Established family suburb of the Macarthur region on the east bank of the Nepean River, immediately east of historic Camden's town centre and about 62 km south-west of the Sydney CBD. Its history runs deep — the first building in the Camden area was a hut erected at the Nepean River crossing around 1805, and the land stayed in farming for the next 200 years until Sydney's suburban sprawl reached Camden and Elderslie was subdivided into housing blocks from the mid-20th century. The result today is a settled suburb of 7,878 residents (2021 census) mixing older riverside homes, 1950s–90s housing and newer estates such as AVJennings' Argyle at Elderslie, with the Camden township across the river providing an historic town-centre backdrop.

Elderslie has no railway station; the nearest station is Macarthur, several kilometres to the east on the T8 Airport & South line. Regular bus coverage within the suburb itself is thin — the Transit Systems services that run into the area are school-bus specials (routes 1029 and 6026) that terminate at Elderslie High School in adjacent Narellan, while the closest regular routes, such as the 895 Campbelltown–Camden–Camden South loop, run through the adjacent Camden township and Camden South, so most residents catch buses there or rely on cars. The Camden Bypass forms the suburb's southern boundary (Camden History, via Elderslie High School website).

Elderslie Public School — NSW government primary (K–6) in the suburb, established 2009 and enrolling around 540 students (school website). The area's public high school is Elderslie High School — a comprehensive co-educational Years 7–12 school of ~950 students established in January 1977 — but its campus is at 48 Hilder Street in the adjacent suburb of Narellan, not within Elderslie itself; its feeder primary schools include Elderslie Public School and Spring Farm Public School.

Shopping & Amenities

Elderslie has only small local shops within the suburb. Everyday shopping — supermarkets, cafes and services — is found in the adjacent Camden town centre (Argyle Street) immediately across the Nepean River, since Camden directly borders Elderslie to the west. John Oxley Cottage, an 1890s historic house in Elderslie converted into the Camden Visitor Information Centre in 1989, is the suburb's best-known heritage amenity.

The Nepean River forms Elderslie's western boundary, with the suburb sitting on the river's east bank and floodplain. In-suburb recreation is sport-focused: a skate park, netball courts, cricket and AFL ovals, a rugby league field and a BMX track.
