Compact residential suburb about 46 km west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Blacktown LGA, part of the Greater Western Sydney region. At 0.8 km² and with 2,295 residents at the 2021 census, it is one of the smallest suburbs in the post-war Mount Druitt district, and it is a young, family-oriented, multicultural community: the median age was 32, children aged 0–14 made up 25.2% of residents, 58.8% of people were born in Australia (with New Zealand 6.0%, the Philippines 4.9%, the Cook Islands 2.7% and Samoa 2.7% the leading overseas birthplaces), 60.2% spoke only English at home (Samoan 6.3%, Tagalog 3.4% and Arabic 3.0% the main other languages) and 9.6% of residents are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Housing is dominated by separate houses, followed by semi-detached/townhouses and units, and the suburb's hub of community life is the Emerton Leisure Centre precinct with Popondetta Park on its doorstep.

Transport
Emerton has no railway station. The suburb is linked by several private bus companies to the train stations at Mount Druitt and St Marys, with Mount Druitt station on the T1 North Shore & Western line the main rail gateway to the city. By road, Emerton is adjacent to the Westlink M7 motorway, giving easy access to the Great Western Highway and the M4, and cycleways run through Emerton from Popondetta Park to Mount Druitt and the M7 cycleway, which connects to the M4 and M2 cycleways.
Schools
Emerton Public School — NSW government primary school (K–6) in the suburb (school website; Good Schools Guide; StMate). There is no high school inside Emerton; local secondary students are served by Chifley College campuses in immediately neighbouring suburbs — Chifley College Bidwill Campus (Years 7–12) in adjacent Bidwill and Chifley College Mount Druitt Campus (Years 7–10) in adjacent Dharruk, where the campus and Dawson Public School are located.
Shopping & Amenities
The suburb's retail hub is Emerton Village, the shopping centre at the junction of Jersey Road and Popondetta Road that is anchored by Woolworths and surrounded by an Australia Post post office, supermarket, service stations, medical centres, take-away food outlets and a hotel; banking is limited to EFTPOS and ATMs. The Emerton Leisure Centre — Blacktown City Council's aquatic and leisure venue in the suburb, renamed the Charlie Lowles Leisure Centre in 2017 — offers indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a hydrotherapy pool, a stadium and outdoor recreation facilities.
Parks & Outdoors
Popondetta Park, which extends between Popondetta Road and Halmahera Creek from Jersey Road to Bougainville Road along the suburb's boundary, has extensive sporting fields for cricket, netball, rugby league and soccer and sits adjacent to the Emerton Leisure Centre. Halmahera Creek, with its open creek-line edges, forms the suburb's western boundary. Emerton covers about 0.9 km² with 4 parks covering nearly 20.3% of the total area.
Property Market
The median house price in Emerton was around ~$890–901k (2026): StMate median house sale price $901k (3-bed); OnTheHouse/Cotality median house value $890,015 as at 31 July 2026; typical range from $651k entry to $1.08M premium (StMate) (mid-2026). See our full Sydney property price map for how the suburb compares across the city. House medians agree closely across trackers: OnTheHouse/Cotality's AVM median house value is ~$890k (31 Jul 2026) against StMate's ~$901k 3-bed sales median, with entry-level homes around $651k and premium homes to about $1.08M. Sales volume is thin — about 22 sales in the past year (StMate) — and the stock is predominantly detached houses (~86% of current listings) with some townhouses (StMate). The suburb itself is tiny (0.8–0.9 km²) with roughly 858 properties. House rents around $525–550/week imply gross yields near 3.0%.
New Developments
The suburb's biggest renewal project was Blacktown City Council's extensive refurbishment of the former Emerton Pool into the Emerton Leisure Centre, reopened in August 2006 after the upgrade and renamed the Charlie Lowles Leisure Centre in 2017. The Emerton Village retail precinct at Jersey Road and Popondetta Road has developed into the district's local shopping hub, anchored by a full-line Woolworths with 308 at-grade car parking spaces. Beyond the suburb, the main development pipeline in the area is the Mount Druitt town centre renewal being delivered by Blacktown City Council under the NSW Government's Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants program (Blacktown City Council).
Jobs & Local Economy
On-site employment is community-based and modest: the Emerton Village shops (Woolworths and specialty retailers), Emerton Public School and the Charlie Lowles Leisure Centre, Blacktown City Council's aquatic and leisure facility in the suburb, provide the main local jobs. Most residents work across the wider Mount Druitt district, where the leading industries are health care and social assistance (~15% of workers), retail trade and transport and warehousing (CensusAtlas). The district's labour market is comparatively weak: 12.0% of Emerton residents were unemployed at the 2021 census against 5.1% nationally — more than double the national rate — and CensusAtlas puts the Mount Druitt area's typical unemployment above the Greater Sydney average.
