Enmore, NSW 2042

A tiny (0.45 km²) inner-west suburb about 5 km south-west of the Sydney CBD, squeezed between Newtown, Stanmore, Petersham and Marrickville, with 3,871 residents at the 2021 census. Like Newtown, Enmore is made up mostly of Victorian-era buildings, particularly along its commercial strip on Enmore Road, which turns off the more famous King Street, Newtown. Enmore Road has been crowned the 17th coolest neighbourhood in the world in Time Out Global's annual round-up, described as the cool sibling of King Street: 'It's where the city's hospo workers come to live, work and play, so you'll find the best natural wines in the bottle shops, and everyone's creative and weird – just the way we like it'. The strip has been designated a 'special entertainment precinct' by Inner West Council so venues can host entertainment, extend trading hours and offer late-night footpath dining without council approval. Enmore also has a significant gay and lesbian population and is a focus for Sydney's goth subculture, with related specialty stores.

Enmore has no railway station of its own; its main public transport spine is Enmore Road, which turns off King Street Newtown, and bus services run along the corridor — route 430 buses serve the Enmore Road strip outside the Enmore Theatre. Nearby King Street in adjacent Newtown is served by bus operators Transdev John Holland and Transit Systems, including the 423 city–Kingsgrove service. The closest railway station is Newtown station on King Street, within about 5 minutes' walking distance of the Enmore Theatre ; Newtown station sits on the Main Suburban line, is served by Sydney Trains T2 Inner West line services, and is heritage-listed with its 1892 overhead booking office.

Schools

In-suburb schooling is limited because the suburb is so small: St Pius' Catholic Primary School (209 Edgeware Road, Enmore) is the suburb's K-6 Catholic primary, part of the Our Lady of the Southern Cross parish, Enmore-Tempe (school website). The suburb is also home to the Design Centre of Excellence (TAFE NSW Sydney Institute) on the site of the former Enmore Boys High School on Edgeware Road. Notably, Enmore no longer has a government school: the former Enmore Public School, a heritage-listed building on Metropolitan Road, was sold by the state at auction in 2009 for $2.8 million to a developer despite local protests, and was later restored and converted into apartments known as 'The Met'. The nearest government primary schools sit just over the suburb boundary in immediately adjacent suburbs — Newtown Public School in Newtown and Stanmore Public School in Stanmore.

Shopping & Amenities

Enmore's life is concentrated on the Enmore Road strip between King Street Newtown and Edgeware Road: the heritage-listed Enmore Theatre — built 1908, Sydney's longest-running live theatre, a medium-sized Art Deco venue holding about 1,700 seated (2,500 standing) that hosts concerts, comedy and performance — anchors a cluster of bars, pubs and live-music venues including the Duke of Enmore corner pub. Food and drink along the strip includes sourdough doughnuts at Comeco Foods, locally famous gelato at Cow and the Moon, charcoal chicken at Cairo Takeaway and 'the best natural wines in the bottle shops', while shops range from Route 66 vintage and the Wilde Merchant retro store to Greens Super Market, described by Time Out as the biggest plant-based supermarket in the country. The former Enmore Post Office (built 1895), a Federation Queen Anne landmark on the corner of Enmore and Stanmore Roads, is heritage-listed. Just over the suburb's southern edge in neighbouring Marrickville, the Marrickville Metro shopping and dining centre is within easy reach of Enmore's Edgeware Road streets.

Parks & Outdoors

Green space inside this 0.45 km² suburb is limited to small local parks and playgrounds run by Inner West Council: Bugler Playground, Francis Street Playground, Enmore Dog Park and Enmore TAFE Park. For bigger open space, residents head a short distance into the immediately adjacent suburbs — notably Newtown's Camperdown Memorial Rest Park, one of the inner west's most popular parks, a short walk from the King Street end of Enmore Road.

Enmore is Victorian terrace territory in a very small footprint: at the 2021 census, 46.3% of occupied private dwellings were semi-detached (terrace) houses, 32.3% flats or apartments and just 17.3% separate houses, and 49.5% of households were renting — well above the national rate of 30.6%. At 2021, 48.2% of homes were owner-occupied and households are predominantly childless-couple professionals. The house median of ~$1.99-1.98M is consistent across trackers; unit values diverge wildly ($0.98M AVM vs $1.15M sales median) because of very low sales numbers.

New Developments

Development is mostly boutique infill, because Enmore's 0.45 km² of heritage Victorian streetscapes leaves little room for large projects. The best-known transformation is 'The Met' on Metropolitan Road: the heritage-listed former Enmore Public School was sold at auction in 2009 for $2.8 million after protests over the state government's sale of the historic school, and was subsequently restored and converted into apartments, which agents market on the building's school heritage. Another adaptive reuse saw the former Enmore Boys High School site on Edgeware Road become the TAFE NSW Sydney Institute Design Centre of Excellence, now the suburb's main institutional campus.

Jobs & Local Economy

Enmore's workforce is predominantly professional, in childless-couple households typical of the inner west. The local employment base is the Enmore Road retail, hospitality and entertainment cluster — the theatre, bars, cafes and specialty shops that lead Time Out to describe the suburb as where the city's hospo workers come to live, work and play — plus the TAFE design campus. At the 2021 census the largest industry of employment for residents was hospitals (4.6%), pointing to the nearby RPA Hospital and inner-west health precinct as a major jobs source just outside the suburb.
