Small, village-feel inner-city suburb about 6 km south-west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Sydney LGA — the old village of Macdonaldtown renamed Erskineville in 1893, still centred on its compact Erskineville Road shopping village around the railway station, with terrace-lined streets and a mix of restored workers' cottages, Victorian terraces and newer apartment blocks. Transdev John Holland route 355 (Marrickville Metro to Bondi Junction via Moore Park & Erskineville) runs via the station, and bus routes 308, 348 and 370 stop near Sydney Park at the suburb's southern edge. Erskineville Public School — NSW government primary school on Swanson Street, in operation since the 1880s (its buildings, 'from 1883', are heritage-listed under the Sydney LEP). St Mary's Catholic Primary School — Catholic systemic primary also on Swanson Street, established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1887 and on its current site since 1912. The suburb is in the catchment of Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, the government secondary school in adjacent Newtown, and Alexandria Park Community School (K–12, in adjacent Alexandria) is listed among the closest comprehensive government schools.
