Established residential suburb of Sydney in the Cumberland Council local government area, part of Greater Western Sydney. Girraween is an Aboriginal word meaning 'place of flowers', first inhabited by the Darug people. It is a compact, family suburb of about 2.3 km² with 6,256 residents at the 2021 census; it is highly multicultural — 34.2% of people were born in Australia, the top other countries of birth were India 34.9% and Sri Lanka 9.9%, 75.9% spoke a language other than English at home, and the top religious affiliations were Hinduism 52.4% and Catholic 14.7%. Households are predominantly couples with children, the median age is 35 and the most common occupation is professional.

Girraween has no railway station. The suburb is serviced by the 705 bus route running from Blacktown to Parramatta. Toongabbie railway station, in adjacent Toongabbie to the west, is also easily accessible by walk or car.
