Glebe, NSW 2037

Leafy, heritage-rich inner-west suburb 3 km south-west of the Sydney CBD on the shores of Blackwattle Bay and Rozelle Bay, in the City of Sydney LGA. The name comes from the land's original use: in 1790 Governor Phillip reserved about 162 hectares along Blackwattle Creek as a 'glebe' to support the Anglican Church, and the Church sold off building allotments from 1828 while holding the middle section - today's Glebe Estate - until the 1970s. The result is one of Sydney's best-preserved Victorian streetscapes: tree-lined avenues of 19th-century terraces, cottages and grand houses wrapped around the village heart of Glebe Point Road, with its bookshops, pubs and cafes and the famous Saturday Glebe Markets in the school grounds, peopled by a mix of students, academics, professionals and long-established families drawn by the University of Sydney next door.

Transport

Glebe has no railway station and no ferry wharf - buses are the everyday link, with routes such as the 433 running from Railway Square along Glebe Point Road and continuing to Balmain. The L1 Dulwich Hill light rail line runs along the former goods-railway corridor on Glebe's harbour shore - not along Glebe Point Road, as is sometimes assumed - with stops at Glebe and Jubilee Park serving the suburb, connecting east to the CBD via Pyrmont and west to Lilyfield, Leichhardt and Dulwich Hill. Frequent bus routes also pass along Parramatta Road and Broadway at the suburb's southern edge.

Schools

Glebe Public School - a government K-6 primary on Glebe Point Road, 'at the heart of one of inner Sydney's most culturally diverse communities' - is the suburb's public school, and its grounds host the Saturday Glebe Markets. St James Catholic Primary School is at 2 Woolley Street, Glebe. Secondary options include St Scholastica's College, an independent Catholic girls' school (Years 7-12) on Glebe Point Road, and, in the public system, Sydney Secondary College's Blackwattle Bay campus - the government senior (Years 11-12) school in Glebe that opened in 1979 as Glebe High School and whose junior campuses are at Balmain and Leichhardt. Forest Lodge Public School sits just across the border in Forest Lodge.

Universities

The University of Sydney's main Camperdown/Darlington campus is directly adjacent to Glebe: its northern boundary runs along Parramatta Road, which forms Glebe's southern edge, so the university's main entrance and Quadrangle are only a 5-10 minute walk from the Broadway end of Glebe Point Road - Glebe's student and staff housing market is shaped entirely by that next-door campus. UTS's main City campus is also within walking distance, just across Broadway in Ultimo, which adjoins Glebe to the east.

Glebe Point Road is the village high street - an eclectic mix of bookshops, vintage and clothing stores, pubs, cafes and restaurants - anchored by the Saturday Glebe Markets in the Glebe Public School grounds, one of Sydney's best-known craft, vintage and second-hand markets. Broadway Shopping Centre, a large mall with supermarkets, cinemas and parking, sits on the suburb's south-eastern corner just across Broadway in Ultimo, and the Tramsheds food-and-retail precinct at Harold Park is a short walk away in neighbouring Forest Lodge.

Waterfront open space defines Glebe's north: the Glebe Foreshore Walk links Bicentennial Park, Jubilee Park and Blackwattle Bay Park along the Rozelle Bay and Blackwattle Bay shores, connecting more than 27 hectares of harbourside parkland and continuing past the fish market toward Pyrmont (bushwalk.com; CorporateKeys; AllTrails). Jubilee Park - renamed in 1909 to mark 50 years of the Glebe municipality - has an oval, foreshore lawns and some of the best Anzac Bridge and city views in the inner west (City of Sydney). Wentworth Park, located in Glebe between the light rail line and Wattle Street, adds multipurpose sports fields, a playground and a greyhound racing arena (City of Sydney). Blackwattle Bay is Glebe's transformative project: with the Sydney Fish Market relocated to its new $836 million building (opened 19 January 2026 at the head of the bay), the NSW Government's Blackwattle Bay precinct program is reshaping the Glebe/Pyrmont foreshore - unlocking roughly 10.4 hectares of harbourside land less than 1 km from the CBD for housing, employment and public open space, with net-zero-by-2041 ambitions, and the old fish market site (in partnership with Mirvac) planned as a mixed-use precinct of more than 1,400 homes including student accommodation, with towers of up to 35 storeys canvassed on parts of the old site. Glebe also retains one of Sydney's largest concentrations of social and affordable housing - the Glebe Estate of Victorian terraces at the suburb's south-eastern end - alongside heritage conservation areas that tightly control new infill. The L1 light rail corridor along the foreshore, with the Glebe and Jubilee Park stops, remains the suburb's public-transport spine.
