Granville, NSW 2142

Historic transport suburb about 18 km west of the Sydney CBD, split between Cumberland Council and the City of Parramatta, whose story is bound up with the birth of rail in NSW: the area was known as Parramatta Junction — near the 1855 terminus of the colony's first railway line — and Granville station (opened 1860 as Parramatta Junction, relocated and renamed 1880) is still a major junction on the network. At the 2021 census Granville had 16,716 residents (QuickProperty; gdp.com.au), a multicultural, largely renting community — 46.3% of residents were renting at the 2011 census, well above the national average. Its character mixes older family homes and weatherboard cottages near the station with newer three-to-four-storey apartment blocks, a compact shopping strip, and light-industrial and showroom pockets along Parramatta Road.

Granville railway station on Bridge Street is a heritage-listed station with four platforms, served by Sydney Trains T1 Western Line and T2 Leppington & Inner West Line services; it is the junction of the Main Western and Main South lines and sits 21.22 km from Central. The station opened on 2 July 1860 as Parramatta Junction, was renamed Granville in 1880, and was the site of Australia's worst rail disaster in January 1977, in which 84 people died. A bus interchange and commuter car park sit beside the station; Transit Systems NSW operates routes 906 (Parramatta to Fairfield), M91 (Parramatta to Hurstville) and S2 (to Sefton) via the station, plus a NightRide night service. Parramatta Road, one of Sydney's oldest thoroughfares, runs through the suburb and links it to the Parramatta CBD to the west.

The suburb's civic heart includes the heritage-listed Granville Town Hall and a Cumberland Council branch library, plus the Granville RSL Club and the Art Deco Crest Theatre, a 1940s cinema now used as a function hall and listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. Granville TAFE — a major campus of the South Western Sydney Institute of TAFE — sits in the suburb. Shopping is centred on the station-precinct shops along Parramatta Road (a walk from the station to Woolworths and local shops, per local listings) and the Granville Place Shopping Centre at 35 East Street.

Parks & Outdoors

Granville Park — the large district sportsground, water-playground and skate park on Montrose Avenue in neighbouring Merrylands, just west of Granville's border — is the area's biggest green space (ParraParents). The suburb sits inside the Duck River catchment, which drains Granville, South Granville, Guildford, Merrylands and Auburn among others (NSW SES Duck River and Duck Creek Flood Study), and Cumberland Council's Duck River Parklands Strategic Masterplan targets the river corridor 'from Auburn to Granville' (Cumberland Council via ellaslist). Local employment is a mix of retail along the Parramatta Road corridor and around the station precinct, light-industrial pockets within Granville itself, and the big industrial estates of neighbouring Clyde and Silverwater on its eastern edge. Granville TAFE (South Western Sydney Institute) is a major education employer in the suburb. Health workers and professionals commute to Auburn Hospital in adjacent Auburn and to the Westmead health precinct, while Parramatta's CBD — only about 5 minutes by train — is the main office jobs hub on Granville's doorstep.
