One of Sydney's smallest and most unusual suburbs: a tiny 1,248-resident pocket (2021 census) squeezed between Parramatta to the north (across the M4), Granville to the east and Merrylands to the west and south, about 20 km west of the Sydney CBD in the Cumberland Council LGA. The suburb was gazetted only in 1999, created so the former Holroyd City LGA — itself named after Arthur Holroyd, its first mayor and a Parramatta MP and judge — would contain a suburb of its own name. It is a former-industrial enclave: the historic Goodlet and Smith brickworks clay pits were redeveloped into Holroyd Gardens Park and the medium-density Holroyd Gardens Estate, which retains heritage brick kilns. The community is strongly multicultural — just 38.2% of residents were born in Australia (India 8.2% the next most common birthplace), only 26.5% speak only English at home, Arabic is spoken by 8.4%, and Islam (30.4%) is the largest religion.
