Hunters Hill, NSW 2110

Exclusive, leafy riverside suburb and peninsula suburb 9 km north-west of the Sydney CBD, set on a high rugged peninsula bounded by the Lane Cove and Parramatta rivers, and the administrative centre of the Municipality of Hunter's Hill — Sydney's smallest local government area at about 6 km². Recognised as Australia's oldest garden suburb, with about 75% of the municipality declared a conservation area (Hunter's Hill Council); it developed from the 1840s as a residential retreat of sandstone villas and cottages built by French settlers such as Didier and Jules Joubert, Italian stonemasons and Irish quarrymen, giving it a distinctive French and continental heritage — the Jouberts' 1855–56 villa Passy remains a symbol of the suburb's French origins (Dictionary of Sydney).
