Kentlyn, NSW 2560

Semi-rural bush suburb of just 726 people (2021 census) on the Georges River's eastern bank, roughly 58 km south-west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Campbelltown LGA and part of the Macarthur region. Kentlyn grew out of the 1920s 'Kent Farms' subdivision of the old Campbelltown Common, in which developer Arthur Rickard sold five-acre (two-hectare) plots for poultry farms, orchards and market gardens; the area was formally named Kent Lyn in 1933 and Campbelltown Council later protected the suburb with 5-acre minimum lot sizes and scenic/bushland zoning, so that today it is 'one of the more upmarket parts of Campbelltown' with large lots, bushland views and a secluded quiet lifestyle. The 2021 census recorded a median age of 43 and a median household income of $2,066 a week, well above the national $1,746, with 85.9% of occupied private dwellings separate houses and 79.1% of homes owner-occupied.

Kentlyn has no railway station and public transport is limited: bus route 883 (Campbelltown–Ruse loop) stops on Georges River Road at Junction Road inside the suburb, with 883K peak/school services running Kentlyn to Campbelltown via Ruse plus dedicated school buses, while the nearest railway stations are Leumeah and Minto on the T8 Airport & South Line, roughly 6–8 km away across the Georges River. The suburb is heavily car-dependent — Georges River Road and Campbelltown Road link Kentlyn to Ruse, Leumeah and Campbelltown and the wider Macarthur road network, and its low-density acreage layout means most trips, including the school run and commuting, are by car.

Schools

Kentlyn Public School is the suburb's NSW government primary school, opened in 1937 on land that was once part of the Campbelltown Common settlement; today it is a small school — about 126 students — that bills itself as 'a small school with a big heart' (Dictionary of Sydney; EducationHQ; NSW DoE). There is no high school inside Kentlyn: secondary students travel out to the high schools of the surrounding Campbelltown-area suburbs, and Kentlyn is served by dedicated school bus services.

Kentlyn is a protected acreage suburb with no shops, commercial centre or post office of its own — its post office operated only from 1936 to 1938. The closest everyday retail is the small 'Ruse Shops' strip on the Georges River Road corridor in the adjoining suburb of Ruse, a recognised destination on local bus route 5536, and residents drive to the larger Leumeah and Campbelltown centres a short distance away for most shopping.

The Georges River forms much of Kentlyn's northern and eastern boundary, with Leumeah and Minto Heights on the opposite bank, and the suburb's 10.6 km² is mostly bushland and large acreage lots — 11 parks cover about 18.6% of the area. Keith Longhurst Reserve, a 76-hectare bushland reserve off Georges River Road (formerly 'The Basin Reserve') with significant scenic and cultural value, offers walking trails down to the Georges River. Bull Cave on Darling Avenue is a heritage-listed Aboriginal rock-art site.
