Kingsford, NSW 2032

Bustling, multicultural suburb on Anzac Parade about 6 km south-east of the Sydney CBD in Randwick City's Eastern Suburbs, sitting directly south of UNSW's Kensington campus. Renamed from 'South Kensington' to Kingsford in 1936 in honour of aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, it grew through a 1920s land boom, and from the 1940s Greek migrants — many from the island of Kastellorizo — settled here and opened businesses along Anzac Parade. At the 2021 census its 13,492 residents made it a classic students-plus-families mix: the largest age group is 20–29-year-olds, many living in medium- and high-density housing around the university, while the 'Nine Ways' shopping heart at Anzac Parade and Gardeners Road keeps a lively village feel of shops, restaurants and clubs. Kingsford is the terminus of the L3 Kingsford Line of the CBD and South East Light Rail, which opened on 3 April 2020 and runs from Juniors Kingsford along Anzac Parade to Circular Quay — construction of the line converted the old 'Nine Ways' roundabout at Anzac Parade and Gardeners Road into a signalised intersection. Anzac Parade is also the suburb's main road and bus corridor, carrying frequent services that connect Kingsford with the city, the eastern beaches and surrounding suburbs. Kingsford has no railway station: an Eastern Suburbs railway extension to Kingsford was originally planned but, as a cost-cutting measure, the line was terminated at Bondi Junction in 1979.

Schools

Kingsford has no government or Catholic school within its own boundaries — local children attend schools in immediately adjoining suburbs. Kensington Public School (NSW government primary, K–6) in adjoining Kensington is the local public school, while Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Primary School (Kensington, founded in 1907 by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart) is the area's Catholic option; Daceyville Public School also sits just across Kingsford's southern boundary in Daceyville (Belle Property; Kensington Public School; Schoolect/OLR Kensington). There is no secondary school in Kingsford itself — high-school students travel to government and independent high schools in surrounding suburbs such as Randwick and Kensington (Belle Property).

Universities

UNSW Sydney — a leading Group of Eight research university — has its main Kensington campus immediately on Kingsford's northern boundary; Wikipedia notes Kingsford is 'situated directly south of the University of New South Wales, which is in Kensington'. The campus is within easy walking distance of most of Kingsford, which is precisely why the suburb's housing stock skews to student flats, share houses and units — UNSW effectively drives Kingsford's residential market and its cafe-and-takeaway economy.

Local retail and hospitality along Anzac Parade — restaurants, cafes, takeaway shops, Newmarket Village and clubs such as Juniors Kingsford and the Castellorizian Club — make up most of the in-suburb employment base. The health precinct of Prince of Wales Hospital and Sydney Children's Hospital in adjoining Randwick is a nearby major employer, and many residents commute to the CBD, which is about 6 km away by bus or light rail.
