Loftus, NSW 2232

Bushland suburb in southern Sydney about 29 km south of the Sydney CBD, in the Sutherland Shire, tucked against the bushland edge of the Royal National Park on Sydney's south-eastern boundary. Loftus is named after Lord Augustus William Frederick Spencer Loftus, Governor of NSW between 1878 and 1885, and grew around Loftus Junction railway station, which opened on the Illawarra line in March 1886. At the 2021 census it had 4,190 residents, 86.2% born in Australia, in a largely family-oriented, low-density suburb with mostly separate houses on bush-fringed streets. It is described as a residential suburb with a bushland atmosphere, and it has long been an education precinct: the University of Wollongong's Sutherland campus and TAFE NSW's Sutherland College Loftus campus sit side by side beside the railway station.

Loftus railway station is on the Illawarra railway line — today the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line on the Sydney Trains network — and serves as an interchange for U-Go Mobility bus services to the area. The original station, Loftus Junction, opened on 9 March 1886 and the station moved to its present site in 1979. The Princes Highway runs along the suburb's eastern border, and Loftus is also home to the Sydney Tramway Museum (South Pacific Electric Railway), which operates heritage trams over the historic Royal National Park branch line from the museum to Royal National Park station — a popular way into the park.

Loftus Public School — NSW government primary school in National Avenue, which opened in January 1953. Aspect South East Sydney School — an autism-specific school operated by Autism Spectrum Australia whose Loftus base site opened in recent years, replacing facilities that previously operated on the Sylvanvale site at Kirrawee; Aspect plans a staged build at the Loftus site that will eventually include a high school base for the region.

University of Wollongong — Sutherland campus at Loftus, the university's Sutherland Shire base at 1 Pitt Street beside Loftus railway station and right next to TAFE NSW; UOW describes it as bringing 'world-class education to the Sutherland Shire', offering degrees focused on health, nursing and social change, and it was still teaching students (including business students) at Loftus per 2024 reporting in the St George & Sutherland Shire Leader (UOW; The Leader, 2024).

Shopping & Amenities

Loftus has no major shopping centre; retail is a small village precinct along National Avenue near the station — anchored by Café Loftus (Shop 1/71 National Ave), a well-regarded local breakfast-and-lunch cafe — and residents look to the much larger Sutherland town centre, which borders Loftus to the west, for supermarkets and banking (Café Loftus; Shire Talk). The Sydney Tramway Museum — a volunteer-run tram museum established in 1950 beside the rail corridor, with heritage tram rides on the old Royal National Park line — is the suburb's landmark visitor attraction. Loftus Rural Fire Service is situated opposite the station, and the suburb hosts sporting clubs including the Loftus Yarrawarrah Rovers Football Club, Loftus Cricket Club and Loftus Zircons Netball Club, plus Camp Wonawong youth camp beside Loftus Creek.

Loftus sits on the bushland edge of the Royal National Park: the suburb's eastern and south-eastern boundary adjoins the park — the Princes Highway marks the edge and the park flanks Sydney's south-eastern boundary — and the historic tram branch line from the Sydney Tramway Museum runs into the park to Royal National Park station. The western border of the suburb is formed by Loftus and Fahy Creeks, and Prince Edward Park and the Woronora Memorial Park cemetery (in neighbouring Sutherland) form part of the northern border, giving the suburb a green, semi-bushland setting.
