Leafy, quiet riverside suburb on the northern bank of the Georges River in the St George area of southern Sydney, 23 km south of the Sydney CBD, known for its large areas of bushland and its river frontage. The suburb occupies the peninsula bounded by the Georges River to the south and west and Lime Kiln Bay to the east — the river frontage gives it a waterside feel rare this close to the city, and the suburb developed mainly residentially in the 1960s when land was released for home sites. Lugarno has no railway station in the suburb — it is served by two U-Go Mobility bus routes: the 943 runs between Lugarno and Hurstville via Penshurst, and the 942 runs between Lugarno and Campsie via Riverwood, Roselands, Wiley Park, Lakemba and Belmore. The Alfords Point Bridge, opened in 1974 when it replaced the long-running Lugarno ferry service (1887–1974), carries Alfords Point Road across the Georges River and is the suburb's key road link toward the M5 corridor. The closest rail options are reached by bus or car — Hurstville station (T4) via the 943, with Oatley station (T4) just across Lime Kiln Bay to the east.
