Maroota, NSW 2756

Far north-western Sydney rural suburb on a sandstone plateau about 49 km north-west of the Sydney CBD — among the geographically northernmost suburbs of Sydney, at the high point (about 200 m above sea level) where Old Northern Road runs along the ridge toward Wisemans Ferry and the Hawkesbury River. Maroota sits on, and owes its nature to, a residual mass of Tertiary river sand known as the Maroota Sand — spring-fed creeks and groundwater make it good orchard, farming and limited-grazing country, and in recent decades it has become Sydney's growing centre of sand mining as the Castlereagh quarries near the end of their life. It had 616 residents at the 2021 census and remains a quiet acreage suburb surrounded by state forest, with views across to the Blue Mountains.

The nearest rail is Windsor station on the T1 Richmond line, about a 20-minute drive south via Wisemans Ferry Road. The Hawkesbury River is just beyond the suburb's northern edge at Wisemans Ferry.
