Matraville, NSW 2036

Family-oriented suburb roughly 9 km south-east of the Sydney CBD in Randwick City's Eastern Suburbs, sitting inland between Maroubra and the Botany Bay headlands. Named after James Matra, the midshipman on Captain Cook's 1770 voyage who proposed the Botany Bay colony, it was settled from the early 1900s and grew around post-war housing and the veterans' soldiers'-settlement estate. The 2021 census profile is strongly family-based: 9,925 residents, median age 42, with 73.8% family households and 51.1% of households made up of couples with children — well above Randwick City's 37.9%. Today it mixes post-war brick homes and settlement cottages with newer infill, anchored by the Matraville village shops on Bunnerong Road, minutes from Maroubra Beach, Westfield Eastgardens and the Botany Bay coastline (Belle Property).

For bigger shopping, Westfield Eastgardens sits just over the suburb's northern boundary in Eastgardens, and Bunnerong Road leads north to the Kingsford and Randwick shopping strips.

Heffron Park — Randwick City's largest recreational park, with playing fields for netball, cricket, rugby, soccer and more — straddles the Matraville–Maroubra boundary on Bunnerong Road and was formerly the site of a World War II naval stores base. The suburb itself is dotted with small council reserves, including Barwon Park, Baird Reserve, Blaxland Reserve, Memorial Reserve on Beauchamp Road, Rabaul Reserve and Purcell Park.
