Meadowbank, NSW 2114

Compact riverside suburb on the northern bank of the Parramatta River, 15 km north-west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Ryde, sitting in a valley with the river at its doorstep. Meadowbank is tiny — about 0.7 km² with a 2021 population of 5,089, up 15.4% since 2016 — and almost entirely high-rise: 96.8% of occupied private dwellings at the 2021 census were flats or apartments. Its character is waterfront apartment living: high-rise towers along the river with views over the water, cafes and restaurants along the water's edge, a railway station and a ferry wharf a short walk apart, plus the parklands of the river foreshore — a mixed commercial-residential suburb with a surprisingly village-like station precinct. Residents skew young professional and cosmopolitan — the dominant age group is 30–39, most households are childless couples in professional occupations, and only 38.2% of residents spoke only English at home in 2021, with China, South Korea and India the top birthplaces. The suburb grew around the railway: Meadowbank station opened as 'Hellenic' on the Main Northern line in 1886 (renamed after the Meadowbank Estate), and row-boat ferries had carried passengers from Schooner Wharf near Helene Park to the Concord shore since 1794.

A small group of shops sits on either side of Meadowbank railway station — the 'Meadowbank railway shops' with their outdoor eating area — and a shopping centre operates within the residential apartment complex to the south along Bay Drive, with waterfront high-rise apartments, cafes and restaurants along the water's edge. TAFE NSW Meadowbank, one of the largest TAFE NSW colleges in Sydney at roughly 15,000 m², is on the east side of the station and has been transformed as part of the Meadowbank Education and Employment Precinct with a Multi-Trades and Digital Technology Hub. For major shopping, Top Ryde City — the district's large regional shopping centre — is a few minutes away in neighbouring Ryde, and the riverside cafes of the Putney foreshore are a short stroll east along the water.

The Parramatta River foreshore is Meadowbank's great outdoor asset: the waterfront bike and jogging track forms part of the Parramatta Valley Cycleway, and the suburb's riverfront parks are threaded along it. Meadowbank Park on Constitution Road is the major sports complex — football, soccer, cricket, baseball, hockey and netball fields — while Memorial Park on Meadow Crescent fronts the river with a bike track, the ferry wharf and a WWII Memorial Walk built from stones of the countries where Australians served.
