Melrose Park, NSW 2114

Small riverside suburb on the northern bank of the Parramatta River, split between the City of Ryde and City of Parramatta local government areas — the original 1928–29 'Golf Links Estate' residential subdivision (part of the Ryde district) sits east of Wharf Road, while the former Ermington industrial zone absorbed by a 2005 boundary change, now the Melrose Park renewal precinct, falls in Parramatta. At the 2021 census it had just 2,059 residents, up 30.8% since 2016 as the renewal took hold. The suburb is named for aviator Charles James Melrose (1913–1936), and its streets recall fellow aviators Cobham, Batten and Amy Johnson; the land was originally Major Edmund Lockyer's 1820s estate, where he built the two-storey sandstone Ermington House (1828). Established riverside post-war family homes are now meeting one of Sydney's biggest urban-renewal projects, master-planned for up to ~6,000 apartments on the old industrial land.

Melrose Park has no railway station, light rail stop or ferry wharf of its own. Bus route 524 runs through the suburb, connecting Melrose Park to West Ryde and Parramatta. Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 — the approved 10 km, 14-stop extension from Parramatta via Camellia, Rydalmere, Ermington and Melrose Park to Sydney Olympic Park — includes a proposed bridge across the Parramatta River between Melrose Park and Wentworth Point; main construction is expected within the next few years.

Melrose Park Public School — NSW government K–6 primary school at 110 Wharf Road, Melrose Park NSW 2114; established in 1944 as Wallumetta Infants' School and renamed Melrose Park Public School in 1947 (school website; Dictionary of Sydney). The school is being redeveloped as part of the suburb's renewal — the new building includes 32 classrooms, support classrooms, a library, hall, covered outdoor learning area and a fee-free public preschool, with staff touring the rooftop of the new building in August 2026 (NSW School Infrastructure; school news). No high school is in the suburb; secondary students attend schools in adjacent suburbs such as West Ryde, Meadowbank and Ermington.

Retail in Melrose Park is minimal: the suburb's shops are the specialty retail and dining in the new Melrose Park Village precinct at 2 Wharf Road — the first completed stage of the urban renewal, marketed as 'Sydney's first smart living community' and home to cafes such as Cafe On Melrose. Otherwise the suburb is almost entirely residential; full-service shopping is a few minutes away in the adjacent centres of West Ryde (town centre just north of Victoria Road) and Meadowbank. The Melrose Park Residents Action Group (MPRAG) and Waterfront Action NSW represent residents on local and waterfront issues.

Melrose Park's defining outdoor asset is its Parramatta River frontage — the river forms the suburb's southern boundary, and the Ryde River Walk runs along the bank with a riverfront neighbourhood playground (Melrose Park playground, with boardwalk, sandstone water feature, swings and play units) located between Meadowbank Park to the east and George Kendall Reserve in Ermington to the west.
