Newtown, NSW 2042

Newtown, about 4 km south-west of the Sydney CBD, is the inner west's — and arguably Sydney's — most recognisably eclectic, bohemian suburb: King Street, one of the first major shopping precincts outside the CBD, is the most complete surviving late-Victorian and Federation-era commercial strip in Australia, and Domain calls the suburb 'a mecca for all things cool'. Its high street of cafes, vintage and book shops, pubs and live-music rooms, plus a higher-than-average concentration of students, LGBT people and artists, has sealed Newtown's reputation as 'Sydney's premier hub of subcultures'. For much of the 20th century it was a denigrated, blue-collar district whose Victorian terraces survived largely through neglect, before gentrification from the late 20th century — at the 2011 census Newtown, St Peters and Erskineville recorded the highest proportions of same-sex couples in Sydney. The suburb sits on Gadigal land and today straddles the Inner West Council and City of Sydney LGAs, with a population of about 15,000 at the 2021 census and a young, mostly-renter profile.

Trains: Newtown railway station — heritage-listed, on the Main Suburban line at the fork of King Street and Enmore Road — is served by T2 Inner West & Leppington Line and T3 Liverpool & Inner West Line trains, with city services roughly every five minutes at peak. Buses along King Street and Enmore Road largely follow the tram routes that last ran in 1957: the 422, 426 and 428 run cityward and out to Tempe, Dulwich Hill and Canterbury, joined by the 352 east through Surry Hills to Bondi Junction and the 370 north to the University of Sydney. King Street itself was bypassed by the WestConnex underground motorway tunnel, keeping through-traffic off the strip (King Street wiki).

Schools

Newtown Public School — NSW government K–6 primary at 1 Norfolk Street in the suburb's centre (NSW DoE school website). Newtown High School of Performing Arts — government Years 7–12 specialist school at 380 King Street, the first NSW government school to provide a continuous program combining academic study with the performing and visual arts; it draws auditioned students from across Sydney. Australia Street Infants School, Camdenville Public School and Newtown North Public School are the other government schools serving local families, and the suburb's heritage includes the 1868 Newtown School of Arts building at the corner of Australia and King Streets, site of NSW's first municipal library.

Universities

The University of Sydney's main heritage-listed Camperdown campus borders Newtown to the north — its grounds run down to City Road, an easy walk or short bus ride from most of the suburb.

Shopping & Amenities

King Street — affectionately dubbed 'Eat Street' — and Enmore Road carry an unbroken strip of independent shops, bookshops, vintage and record stores, cafes, pubs and restaurants spanning cheap Thai to serious modern Australian dining, which Domain says gives Newtown the highest concentration of art and entertainment spaces in the city. Entertainment landmarks include the Enmore Theatre at 118–132 Enmore Road — built 1908, Sydney's longest-running live theatre (opened 1912 as a photo-play house, remodelled in Art Deco style in 1937), five minutes' walk from the station — and the Dendy Newtown arthouse cinema at 261 King Street, 100 metres from Newtown station. The heritage-listed Trocadero at 69–77 King Street, the famed Sandringham Hotel pub-music venue and Newtown's many small bars round out a nightlife scene that spills into neighbouring Enmore and Erskineville.

Camperdown Memorial Rest Park — on the Federation Road, Lennox and Church Streets corner at Newtown's northern end — is the suburb's big local open space: formerly the Camperdown Cemetery founded in 1848, it was converted into a large grassed park in 1948 and is now popular for picnics and casual ball games, with a fenced playground, toilets and off-leash dog areas. The 41.6-hectare Sydney Park in nearby Alexandria — with its distinctive hills, wetlands, the Alan Davidson sports oval, playgrounds, heritage brickworks remnants and cycleways, adjacent to St Peters station — is about a 10-minute bike or bus ride from Newtown.

Closer in, Newtown's renewal is mostly small-scale: former King Street warehouses such as Alpha House and Beta House have been converted into apartments, and new boutique apartment and shop-top projects continue along the strip and the rail corridor.

Retail and hospitality along King Street, Enmore Road and Australia Street form Newtown's main local employment base — an unbroken stretch of shops, restaurants, pubs and venues that has made the suburb a destination for dining and nightlife. Many residents work or study at the adjacent University of Sydney, and the South Eveleigh technology precinct nearby hosts Commonwealth Bank's large tech workforce along with start-ups, venture capital and legal firms. Newtown's performing-arts institutions — Newtown High School of Performing Arts, the Enmore Theatre and its many live-music rooms — also support a substantial arts and events workforce.
