North Strathfield, NSW 2137

Inner-west suburb about 11 km west of the Sydney CBD, wedged between Concord and Strathfield on the rail corridor; the name comes from the railway station built in 1918, and 'North Strathfield' was only gazetted as a separate suburb in 1993, joining the north-eastern corner of Homebush with the south-western corner of Concord — a quirk that lingers, with many places in the suburb still identified as Homebush or Concord in common parlance. At the 2021 census it had 4,618 residents: multicultural and comparatively affluent, with a median household income of about $2,385 per week, well above the state median. The housing stock is a genuine mix — family houses on the Concord side plus a growing apartment stock (about 55% of dwellings are flats or apartments, many in newer mid-rise towers beside the station), giving the suburb a family-and-professionals character that blends Concord-style suburban streets with an increasingly urban, station-oriented pocket.

North Strathfield railway station is on the T9 Northern Line of the Sydney Trains network, with trains to the CBD roughly every 10 minutes. Transit Systems NSW runs two bus routes through the suburb: 410 (Macquarie Park to Hurstville) and 458 (Ryde to Burwood). The suburb is bisected by the Main North railway line and sits close to Parramatta Road, giving easy access to the major arterial road network.

Strathfield North Public School — NSW government primary school on Concord Road in North Strathfield with more than 650 students, sitting immediately adjacent to the North Strathfield Shopping Village; it is the local primary catchment school for North Strathfield. Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School — Sydney Catholic Schools K–6 school that opened on 1 May 2015 (the archdiocese's 150th school) in a converted former Telstra training centre, now catering for Kindergarten to Year 6 (Sydney Catholic Schools; Archdiocese of Sydney). There is no university campus in North Strathfield itself, but the Australian Catholic University's Strathfield campus (Mount Saint Mary, 25A Barker Road) sits in the immediately adjacent suburb of Strathfield — directly across the Main North railway line from North Strathfield — making ACU the local university campus for the suburb.

The North Strathfield Shopping Village is a small neighbourhood retail strip on Concord Road (roughly between Wellbank Street and Correys Avenue) serving a primary trade area of about 4,850 residents and workers, and is the subject of the council's Concord Road, North Strathfield Place Plan, which includes a $600,000 streetscape upgrade (City of Canada Bay Council). A small group of restaurants and cafes sits opposite the railway station, while the former Arnott's Biscuits factory on George Street has been redeveloped as the Bakehouse Quarter — offices, restaurants, cafes, supermarkets and shops — which still houses Arnott's corporate headquarters and the NRMA's head office and main call centre. The DFO Homebush factory outlet (126 stores) is just a few minutes away at 3-5 Underwood Road in neighbouring Homebush (Sydney.com; Occupi).

Parks & Outdoors

North Strathfield is a densely built suburb without a large destination park of its own, so outdoor space means the parklands of immediately neighbouring suburbs: Sydney Olympic Park, which the suburb touches at its north-west corner, holds 425 hectares of parkland including Bicentennial Park (40 ha, opened 1988) and the Brickpit Ring Walk, while Bayview Park, a shaded riverside park overlooking the Parramatta River, lies in neighbouring Concord (ParraParents).

Sydney Metro West North Strathfield station — the future metro line includes a North Strathfield station, and City of Canada Bay Council finalised local planning studies for the station precinct in March 2026, setting up a major station-precinct renewal with higher-density housing (City of Canada Bay Collaborate portal). New apartment towers have already risen beside the station on George Street — for example the developments at 19–21 and 27–29 George Street, where two- and three-bedroom units sold for around $915K–$930K in early 2026. North Strathfield railway station itself was upgraded in 2019 with new lifts and modern amenities, and the suburb's landmark transformation remains the Bakehouse Quarter redevelopment of the former Arnott's factory site.
