Oatley, NSW 2223

Leafy, family-oriented riverside suburb about 18 km south of the Sydney CBD on the Georges River, in the St George area and within Georges River Council. It is a suburb of established houses — 70.8% of dwellings are separate houses with just 16.7% flats and units — and at the 2021 census had 10,664 residents, 71.1% born in Australia. The council tourism site calls Oatley a scenic suburb 'renowned for its waterfront views, bushland reserves and village-style shopping strip', and its 45-hectare Oatley Park, almost surrounded by the river, attracts visitors year-round (Discover Georges River). Oatley is a train-line suburb that grew around the 1885 Illawarra railway, is named after James Oatley, a convict watchmaker who built the clock atop Sydney's Hyde Park Barracks, and retains a strong community identity built around the Oatley village, parklands, swimming club and sporting clubs.

Its Jewfish Bay Baths (Oatley Park Baths) swimming enclosure — in use since at least 1919 and about 320 metres across — is one of NSW's largest swimming enclosures and home to the Oatley Amateur Swimming Club founded 1927. The park's castellated tower, known as Oatley Park Castle, was built during the 1930s Depression relief works as a visitor attraction and is now hired for functions, alongside the Lime Kiln Wetlands, Myra Wall Garden (1964) and the Steamroller/Bush Park playground with its historic steamroller.
