Old Toongabbie is a historic, quietly residential family suburb of Greater Western Sydney, about 29 km west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Parramatta, with 3,276 residents at the 2021 census. It is the site of one of Australia's oldest inland settlements: Governor Phillip established a government farm and convict station on Toongabbie Creek in 1792 to grow food for the colony — the third settlement after Sydney and Parramatta — and 'Toongabbie' (reportedly meaning 'place near the water', from the local Dharug people) is regarded as the oldest official use of an Aboriginal place-name in Australia. The original township beside the creek became known as 'Old Toongabbie' once the railway and its station, opened in 1880, drew the name 'Toongabbie' to the area around the station to the west; parts of the old suburb later became Constitution Hill, Winston Hills and Pendle Hill. Today it is an established, predominantly owner-occupier suburb of family homes on larger blocks with quieter streets.

Old Toongabbie has no railway station within the suburb — the nearest stations sit in the neighbouring suburbs: Toongabbie railway station (opened 26 April 1880 on the Main Western line, served by T1 Western and T5 Cumberland services) is just to the west in Toongabbie, and Pendle Hill station (T1 and T5) lies to the south-west in Pendle Hill.
