A semi-rural suburb on the western edge of metropolitan Sydney, 49 km west of the CBD, sitting in the centre of the City of Penrith and part of the Greater Western Sydney region. Settled from 1806, the suburb takes its name from the orchards that covered its undulating hills around the turn of the 20th century — the name was settled at a public meeting at the local school in October 1910 — and it still has a predominantly rural character, with scenic vistas and a landscape mainly overlaid with orchards and grapevines, now dotted with newer housing development; council describes it as epitomising 'a harmony of urban and rural qualities'. It is a quiet, low-density pocket (population about 1,798) that mixes acreage, hobby farms and horse properties with modern family estates such as the Orchard Hills North community, the suburb's first major new residential estate. Orchard Hills is also home to the heritage-listed Mamre homestead, once owned by Samuel Marsden and listed on the NSW State Heritage Register.

Transport
Orchard Hills has no railway station today — public transport is bus-based, with Busways services linking the suburb with Penrith and St Marys (including route 776, St Marys–Penrith, grouped under Orchard Hills on Busways' route pages, and the Luddenham–Penrith route 789), plus school services such as the 4062 route that stops at Orchard Hills Medical Centre on Bringelly Road. The nearest T1 Western Line train stations are St Marys and Kingswood on the suburb's northern edge. That changes soon: an Orchard Hills station on the Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport line was confirmed in June 2020 and is due to open in 2026.
Schools
Orchard Hills Public School — NSW government K–6 primary at 79–101 Kingswood Road, established in the suburb's early days (a public meeting was held at 'the new school' in 1910 to name the suburb) and serving around 200 students. Penrith Christian School — independent Christian K–12 school at 1 Simeon Road, Orchard Hills (EducationHQ). Penrith Anglican College — low-fee Anglican K–12 co-educational college at 338–356 Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills (School Choice; Good Schools Guide).
Shopping & Amenities
There is no large shopping centre in the suburb. Local facilities are scattered and small-scale — the Orchard Hills Medical Centre on Bringelly Road, an outside-school-hours care centre at the public school, and the two K–12 private colleges on its roadsides — so most daily shopping, services and dining are done in the immediately adjoining centres of St Marys (town centre and St Marys Village) and Kingswood, or a short drive into Penrith's CBD beyond South Penrith.
Parks & Outdoors
Outdoor life here is about space: undulating hills, scenic vistas and orchard- and vineyard-dotted paddocks give the suburb its semi-rural, small-holding character. South Creek, a major western-Sydney waterway, traces the suburb's boundary with St Marys, whose western limit the creek forms. The grounds of the heritage-listed Mamre homestead — Samuel Marsden's former estate — sit within the suburb.
Property Market
The median house price in Orchard Hills was around No reliable single figure: suburb-wide medians swing from $2,993,375 (property.carto.au, Aug 2026) to $6.2M (SuburbCheck) and $7.05M (realestate.com.au 12-month median) on very thin sales skewed by acreage; typical family houses on standard lots sell around $1.2–1.6M (see notes) (mid-2026). See our full Sydney property price map for how the suburb compares across the city. Sales volumes are tiny — roughly 6–36 house sales a year, and the suburb mixes large acreage holdings with standard-lot estate housing. That makes published medians wildly divergent and acreage-driven: property.carto.au $2,993,375 (Aug 2026); SuburbCheck $6.20M; realestate.com.au's 12-month median $7.05M (its example sale, 187–199 Kingswood Road — a 2.02-hectare parcel — fetched $8,676,000 in 2026); AusPropertyFinder's separate 'acreage' category median is $12M. Standard-lot family houses and new Orchard Hills North Estate homes sit well below those headline figures — e.g. 13 Heaton Avenue (4-bed) sold for $1,555,000, in line with the roughly $1.2–1.6M typical range for estate homes. There is effectively no unit market, so a unit median is not meaningful. Median land value: $560,000 on 2025 NSW Valuer General data across 238 properties (AusPropertyFinder).
New Developments
Orchard Hills North Estate — the suburb's first major new residential community, with Penrith City Council referring to 'Orchard Hills North' as a new suburb as residential and industrial land releases began; it is marketed on proximity to the Western Sydney Airport (about 14 km away), with the estate's metro station due in 2026. Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line — an Orchard Hills station was confirmed in June 2020 and is due to open in 2026, giving the suburb its first rail service. Ongoing acreage subdivisions and rural-residential growth continue to edge housing into the orchard and grazing land.
Jobs & Local Economy
Local employment is small-scale: agriculture and horticulture on remaining orchard and vineyard holdings, the two K–12 colleges and the public school, and local services such as the medical centre. Most working residents commute out — to industrial and retail jobs in nearby St Marys, Kingswood and Penrith, or further along the M4 to Parramatta and Sydney — with the Western Sydney Airport and Aerotropolis opening near Orchard Hills touted by the Mayor of Penrith as a future source of local jobs.
