Penshurst, NSW 2222

Established, leafy family suburb in southern Sydney, 17 km south of the Sydney CBD in the St George area of the Georges River Council LGA, with mostly low to medium-density housing. Named after Penshurst in Kent, England, the suburb grew out of the Connell's Bush estate on Robert Townson's original land grant, subdivided by the Laycock family from the 1830s, with the railway arriving in the late 1880s (the station opened in 1886 and was rebuilt at its current site in 1905). It retains heritage anchors such as West Maling (663-665 King Georges Road) and the Penshurst Reservoirs on Laycock Road, both state heritage-listed. Penshurst is a multicultural, family-oriented community - 12,592 residents at the 2021 census, with Chinese (24.5%), English (16.0%) and Australian (14.4%) the top ancestries and 47.7% born in Australia - and the village centre around the station, anchored socially by the Penshurst RSL Club, sits just west of the busy Hurstville commercial hub.
