Picnic Point, NSW 2213

Riverfront family suburb of south-western Sydney roughly 23 km south-west of the CBD, sitting on a bend on the northern bank of the Georges River in the City of Canterbury-Bankstown; at the 2021 census it had about 6,413 residents. 'Picnic Point' was the name given to the geographical feature on the river itself — the area has long been popular with picnickers — and the suburb was gazetted in 1975 after originally forming part of East Hills. Today it is an established, leafy, low-density suburb of largely owner-occupied family homes, many on generous 600–1,000 m² riverfront or water-view blocks, with boat ramps giving residents direct access to the Georges River for boating, waterskiing and wakeboarding.

Picnic Point has no railway station — the East Hills line runs to the north of the suburb, and T8 Airport & South line services are caught at East Hills station in adjoining East Hills (borders Picnic Point to the north-west) or Panania station in adjoining Panania (borders Picnic Point to the north), per the Wikipedia infobox adjacencies. Within the suburb, transport is bus-based: route 923 (U-Go Mobility) runs Panania to Bankstown via Picnic Point, connecting the suburb to both T8 stations.

Picnic Point's commercial heart is a compact strip of local shops, takeaways and cafes along Picnic Point Road and Kennedy Street — including the Coffee Point cafe — rather than a large shopping centre (whereinterestinghappens.com.au). There is no supermarket or big retail precinct in the suburb; residents shop in the village centres of immediately adjacent Panania (to the north) and East Hills (to the north-west).

Picnic Point's southern and eastern edges front the Georges River, and the suburb features a number of parks and reserves along the river, including part of the Georges River National Park — Yeramba Lagoon, within the suburb, is described as the largest tract of national park in the City of Canterbury-Bankstown and is home to numerous species of native fauna and flora, with the Yeramba Lagoon Loop Track a popular walk. Fitzpatrick Park offers views across the river bend, and boat ramps provide river access for boating, waterskiing and wakeboarding. The national park at Picnic Point is a popular spot for picnics and barbecues, fishing and walking (NSW National Parks).

No major residential towers or master-planned projects are proposed for the suburb — the nearby growth is in the commercial corridors of adjoining Panania and Revesby rather than in Picnic Point itself.

Local employment centres on the two public schools, the small Picnic Point Road shopping strip and local trades and services. Most employed residents commute out of the suburb — by T8 train via East Hills or Panania stations to the Sydney CBD, or by car along Henry Lawson Drive and the M5 to the Bankstown, Liverpool and airport employment markets. The larger retail job base of Panania's village centre sits just across the suburb's northern boundary.
