Picton, NSW 2571

Historic town that serves as the administrative centre of Wollondilly Shire, located 81 km south-west of the Sydney CBD on the far south-western fringe of Greater Sydney. Established as Stonequarry in 1841 and renamed Picton in 1845, it grew around the Main Southern railway line after the railway arrived in 1863 and the town has a strong heritage character — the George IV Inn on Argyle Street (reputedly built 1839) is considered one of the oldest hotel buildings in Australia, and the suburb holds a string of heritage listings including the 1863 railway station, the Stonequarry Creek railway viaduct and the 1897 timber-trestle Victoria Bridge. At the 2021 census Picton had 5,282 residents, and it functions as the civic and commercial heart of the Wollondilly Shire while remaining a country-town escape on the route to the Southern Highlands.

Picton Buslines operate routes 900 (Campbelltown), 901 (Wilton and Douglas Park), 911–914 (Buxton, Bargo, Yanderra, Thirlmere) and 915 (Nangarin Estate) to and from Picton station, and Berrima Buslines run the 828 'Loopline' bus via Picton to Bowral station connecting with NSW TrainLink (Picton railway station).
