Potts Hill, NSW 2143

Small, quiet residential suburb in the City of Canterbury-Bankstown about 21 km south-west of the Sydney CBD, sharing the 2143 postcode with Regents Park and Birrong. Much of the suburb's land is occupied by the Potts Hill Reservoir estate, operated by Sydney Water, and the 2021 census counted just 1,454 residents — 45.8% born in Australia, with a multicultural mix (Arabic 16.2%, Vietnamese 9.0% and Korean 7.8% among languages spoken at home) and Islam the most common religion at 35.5%. The suburb is named after Joseph Hyde Potts, an accountant at the Bank of NSW who received a grant here in 1833; its history is bound up with Sydney's water supply — migrant workers building the City Water Tunnel lived in the Potts Hill camp from 1948 to 1955, and CSIRO ran a pioneering radio-astronomy field station beside the reservoir from 1948 to 1962.
