Harbourside inner-city peninsula 2 km south-west of the Sydney CBD that forms the western arm of Darling Harbour, in the City of Sydney LGA; the Dharug name for the area was Pirrama, and the suburb took its English name from a mineral spring that reminded early settlers of Bad Pyrmont in Germany. Pyrmont was the colony's industrial powerhouse - sandstone quarries, the CSR sugar refinery, wharves, shipyards and vast woolstores - before industry moved out and the area declined; since the 1990s it has been reborn as one of Sydney's most densely built waterfront neighbourhoods of high-rise apartments and converted warehouses (Jackson's Landing, Jones Bay Wharf, Darling Island), with The Star casino dominating the harbourfront and tech and corporate offices such as Google Australia's headquarters at 48 Pirrama Road. At the 2021 census it had 12,658 residents, just 40.7% of them born in Australia - an international, professional-skewed, apartment-living population typical of a CBD-fringe peninsula.

Transport
Light rail is the peninsula's spine: the L1 Dulwich Hill light rail line has five stops inside Pyrmont - Pyrmont Bay, The Star, John Street Square, Bank Street and Wentworth Park - running up through the suburb toward Central and out to Dulwich Hill. Buses also serve Harris Street and the peninsula's main roads, and the Pyrmont Bay ferry wharf is on the F4 Pyrmont Bay ferry service across the harbour to Circular Quay. For the future, Pyrmont railway station - an underground station on the Sydney Metro West line - is under construction on the peninsula, with the line targeting an opening in 2032. The heritage Pyrmont Bridge remains the pedestrian and cycling link across Darling Harbour to the CBD.
Schools
Pyrmont Public School - the government primary school on John Street, a historic 1891 school building in the suburb's heritage core - is the public school inside Pyrmont. Ultimo Public School at 47-53 Jones Street in neighbouring Ultimo also serves families on the peninsula's fringe. There is no public high school within Pyrmont: nearby secondary options in adjacent suburbs include Sydney Secondary College's Blackwattle Bay campus (government Years 11-12 school in Glebe, established 1979 as Glebe High School), St Scholastica's College (Catholic girls' Years 7-12, on Glebe Point Road) and International Grammar School (independent K-12, Ultimo).
Universities
UTS - the University of Technology Sydney's main City campus - is in Ultimo, the suburb that directly adjoins Pyrmont along the Harris Street corridor, so a major university is effectively next door: UTS's towers on Broadway are roughly a 10-15 minute walk from Pyrmont's eastern edge, and Ultimo is also home to the Sydney Institute of TAFE. The University of Sydney's Camperdown campus lies further south on the far side of Glebe and Ultimo and is not immediately adjacent to Pyrmont.
Shopping & Amenities
The Star - Sydney's casino and hotel complex with The Star Grand and The Darling hotels plus restaurants, bars and events spaces on the Darling Harbour waterfront - anchors the peninsula's harbourfront. The Sydney Fish Market sits on Blackwattle Bay at Pyrmont's southern tip, with its landmark new $836 million building (designed by 3XN and BVN) opening on 19 January 2026. Day-to-day needs are met by a Coles supermarket within the suburb (Coles store finder) and the cafes and restaurants around Harris Street, the John Street Square light rail stop and the converted Jones Bay Wharf and Darling Island warehouse precincts; the dining strip of Pyrmont Bridge Road lies just across the border in Glebe, and Darling Quarter's restaurants, cinemas and playground on the far side of Darling Harbour are a short walk from Pyrmont's eastern shore.
Parks & Outdoors
Pirrama Park (formerly Pyrmont Point Park) crowns the peninsula's northern tip with lawns, playgrounds and harbour views across to Balmain East, and the foreshore open space continues south-west along the water to Waterfront Park near the Glebe Island Bridge, with a continuous harbourside walking route around the peninsula. Wentworth Park - the large sports park with playing fields, cricket nets and a greyhound racing arena - lies just across the light rail corridor in adjacent Glebe, easily reached on foot (City of Sydney).
Property Market
The median house price in Pyrmont was around $2,144,000 (median house sale price based on just 10 sales in the preceding 12 months - PropTrack via property.com.au, retrieved Sep 2026); OnTheHouse put the median house value at $1,548,461 as at 31 Mar 2026. House medians swing wildly on near-zero annual volumes (mid-2026). See our full Sydney property price map for how the suburb compares across the city. Pyrmont is an extreme unit market: the 2021-census population of 12,658 lives almost entirely in apartment towers built since the 1990s (Jackson's Landing, Jones Bay Wharf, Darling Island, Mount Street and Pirrama Road precincts), and OnTheHouse counts 9,415 properties in the suburb. Genuine houses are scarce heritage cottages and terraces, so house medians are based on single-digit annual sales and swing wildly between trackers ; luxury penthouses skew bedroom medians sharply upward. Buyers are largely investors, CBD professionals and downsizers, with high rents and correspondingly low yields.
New Developments
Pyrmont is one of Sydney's most active urban-renewal areas. Sydney Metro West's Pyrmont station is under construction, with the line targeting an opening in 2032. The new Sydney Fish Market - an $836 million, 3XN GXN/BVN-designed harbourside building at Blackwattle Bay - opened on 19 January 2026 as the first completed project of the Blackwattle Bay renewal, and the old market site is earmarked for redevelopment with Mirvac as a mixed-use precinct of more than 1,400 homes including student accommodation, with towers of up to 35 storeys canvassed around the bay. The Pyrmont Peninsula Place Strategy (finalised December 2020) sets a 20-year framework for up to 23,000 more jobs and 4,000 new homes, with sub-precinct plans for areas such as Harris Street and Pyrmont village (NSW Planning). A long-mooted tourism redevelopment of The Star - including a proposed 220-room luxury hotel tipped to return the Ritz-Carlton brand to Sydney - has been floated again since the 2020 rezone of the peninsula (Hotel Management).
Jobs & Local Economy
The Star casino and hotel complex is the suburb's anchor employer, and the peninsula's commercial towers at Darling Island, Jones Bay Wharf, Pirrama Road and Harris Street house tech and professional-services headquarters - Google Australia (48 Pirrama Road) and Accenture among them - plus media and creative businesses, with Network 10 and the Nova radio network long headquartered in Pyrmont. The ABC's Ultimo broadcast centre on Harris Street sits just across the suburb border, and the NSW Government's Pyrmont Peninsula Place Strategy targets the corridor as an innovation and tech employment precinct supporting up to 23,000 additional jobs (NSW Planning).
