A multicultural family suburb in Southern Sydney, 19 km south of the Sydney CBD and part of the St George area. Originally known as Herne Bay, it was renamed Riverwood in 1957 largely to shed a reputation for poverty, overcrowding and violence built around the area's WWII US Army hospital buildings; from the 1950s purpose-built public housing apartment blocks and bungalows replaced those former military buildings on the northern side of the railway line, while the southern part was mostly privately developed. At the 2021 census it had 12,793 residents — 38.8% born in Australia, with Mainland China (18.3%), the Philippines (3.0%), Lebanon (2.8%), Vietnam (2.8%) and Hong Kong (2.7%) the next most common birthplaces, and only 31.3% speaking only English at home. The mix of older public-housing flats and private post-war homes gives the suburb a distinctly mixed, community-oriented character.

Transport
Riverwood railway station is on the East Hills railway line (T8 Airport & South Line services), with Padstow station to the west and Narwee station to the east. The suburb is not a bus terminus, although the private operator Punchbowl Bus Company is headquartered at its depot on Hannans Road, Riverwood. The M5 South Western Motorway crosses Belmore Road in Riverwood with on- and off-ramps for north-east- and south-west-bound traffic, making it one of Sydney's best-connected public-housing-era suburbs by road.
